Default Silencer box

Hey guys i am a new Subaru owner and i am in love with me new STI and i now see why you all rave so much about them over the past years. I have been reading this awesome forum before i bought my car and have gained alot of knowledge from you all, but one thing i havent seen talked about is the Silencer box. I removed mine just to get some extra "music" from the front of the car since i dont have any exhaust yet nor will i be putting an intake or drop in filter anytime soon since i dont want to tune it yet, at least not until i get my DP and catback. My question is, Is there and adverse effects from removing the silencer box with the new STI's? and also is there any performance gain from removing it? Cause it does sounds cool. Thanks in advance.

nope, no issues. as you're intuitions indicated, its just more audible when you step on the gas. i have it removed and kinda like the extra noise it makes

Just more music. Some 'misinformed' people claim it does this and that but the one and only thing I could see is less life for the filter since it picks up dirt being thrown around. I don't know if this is even remotely the case with the 08's but I could tell by removing my 06's silencer box that it's more open to getting dirty- but not by much to care. Again this is pretty much nit picking at a small thing.

As they say, there are usually two sides to every story and heres the other (just to play devils advocate):

To my knowledge, the mass air sensor is tuned to read air in a certain manner and does so with the factory snorkel in place. If you remove that, no one here is qualified to say that it wont have an effect on the reading from the sensor. Again, playing devils advocate, its possible that removing snorkel would effect turbulence around the sensor giving a false reading and effecting the tune in one way or the other.

With that said, I dont think removing the snorkel would effect turbulence enough to change the outcome, especially considering that you do have a filter in the way between the snorkel and the sensor, any change in front of the fileter would have a minimal effect if any. Again thats where no one would KNOW, its just a guess.

From what I've seen, no one has had a problem with the removal.

not sure if you want to filter through 5 pages of ish just to find the removal method. anyway, all you gotta do is remove the air box and one of the pieces is connnected to the air box. you do not have to go through the front wheel well, you can do everything from the engine bay.
