Default Perrin catback, technical glitch

I installed the Perrin catback on Thursday and have been figuring the piece out throughout the weekend. It went in pretty easily (as catbacks usually do) and lines up ok with the factory mounting points pretty well, save for the front right hanger on the muffler. The right tip then hangs out about a inch more than the left side tip. Perrin provided some locking collars for the hangers and it seems to have put a bandaid on the fitment.

Also, I'm not sure what it is about flex pipes (braided stainless steel), but my experience is that they make screeching/whistling noises under full boost leading me to think there is a leak. Perrin's catback has one of these connections and makes the same noise.

The glitch mentioned in the subject is that my turbo now seems to be spiking up to ~18.1psi on COBB's v101 91 oct map before tapering back down. Its not like a creep you would find from a catless DP, but still concerning since boost is only supposed to peak at 16.5 (+/- .5).

I've emailed Perrin about these issues so hopefully we can resolve any of the issues with the piece. All in all, I'd still get this exhaust before paying another 200 for other equivalent pieces.

Cheers for now,
Chris

Did you reset the ECU after you installed the cbe?

That could account for some of your boost issue, if not all.

Not only that, I went from a 93oct map down to the 91oct map (all v101) and it was still getting above 18psi (18.43, or where the AP stops displaying anything higher). I just switched down ACN map and the throttle response sucks but it hasn't yet gone over 17.8. ie, still boosting almost 2 psi above target.

I've tried to resolve the leaky exhaust from the cat to cat back connection but Perrin's customer service isn't exactly high speed. I've also tried all combinations of gaskets and high temp sealant all to no avail leading me to believe its the flex section itself that is leaking (same problem I had with my old up pipe).

I even took the center pipe off and if it didn't look so tacky with the two different color pipes under there, I'd keep it that way. If you're just looking for better sound, see if you can get the axle back section as it sounds near perfect as compared to stock.

I have a side by side video of the perrin on youtube
YouTube - 2008 STI Stock Exhaust vs Perrin

as for the whistling are you sure it is not the turbo sucking in more air, " easy out easy in" if it was a an exhaust leak it would not sound like that kind of whistle, My S4 did it after I chiped and boost went above 1 bar.

I think Perrin has great serive this week I have talked to Jeff a number of times about another order I just place.

did you re-use the stock bolts with the springs at the cat? if so, that will cause the whistling.

Yes I did, directions said to reuse them with the stock cat. I'll give it a try with the bolts they supplied though.

Thanks for the tip I had yet to think about

i've had that issue with my wrx's. when you use the springs, they are not strong enough for a non-donut gasket so when the car is under load or the engine twists alot, the seal will break and create a leak.

I was following the directions to use the stock gasket and the flat one provided. Maybe I read it wrong

Matt, I'm assuming you haven't had any problems at all with the regular bolts? I'm going to give it a shot with the provided ones (if I can find them) tomorrow.

Bolts provided by Perrin wont go through the factory downpipe. I think its got to be the flex section

enlarge the holes, or get a new downpipe.

i find it hard to believe a new flex would leak, they are convoluted inside.
