Default Driveline shunt/jerk

Hi Guys,

Went for my 2nd test drive on the 08 STI today.

The 1st drive had me all excited about the power (I am used to MUCH slower cars) so I didn't pay too much attention to the other stuff.

The 2nd drive has gotten me concerned about the 'jerkiness' on the gearchanges. I haven't driven the 07 and earlier STIs' btw. Even the supposedly more mainstream 08 has me finding the shunt/jerk on everything except the most gentle slow gearchanges pretty harsh.

Do you guys just live with it or is there anything that can be done about it?

Spend a week with it and the jerkiness will be gone. You're just not used to it.

Yup, driver error... will not be an issue once you get used to the car.

You will come to appreciate how tight that setup is and being good with it is something to be proud of. It's not like driving a civic stick.

Hmm, so when you guys get used to the car and drive it, does the jerk/shunt/judder totally go away or is it still there but just more bearable?

Its not like I am new to manual vehicles but under my foot the 08 does shudder everytime I let the clutch bite.

I had a slight issue with this when i first got my 08. To me the clutch seemed to have a really abrupt release point. After about 1k miles though it smoothed way out and i got use to it.

I still marvel at how tight everything is.

Another thing u will notice are all the different sounds(clicks) your car will make when u are say, backing up or turning really tight. This too is also normal.

Over all i couldn't be happier with my 08 !!

The only jerkiness I've noted is when creeping in 1st/2nd. You've got to have overly gentle throttle inputs or you can get some light but annoying bucking. I never really noticed this in my '05 which makes me suspect there is more driveline movement in the '08s.

It's performance stick. Even once you get totally used to it every so often you'll biff a shift or even stall it. It keeps you humble and let's you know if you're not paying enough attention to the task at hand. Believe me, dont put much thought into this. Buy it, start learning it and you'll be in love. It is a phenomenal machine in all climates.
