Default Air Intake resonator box: reason for?

Hi,

following others here, yesterday I've removed my resonator from the airbox. I've simply removed leaving the hole open.
Someone here was reporting no noticeable difference in anything. For sure it doesn't change nothing in power. But, for the sound, meanwhile there is no difference with the "I" map, if you go to "S#" there is a HUGE difference! Much, much more "baritonal" air suction tone now and only in "S#". I love it.

Now the techy question: that funny resonator box (that is clear was designed for an easy dismount by origin) what is there for? It is really just to produce less sound due to the short intake to turbo distance or does have any effect also on performance/turbo?

Being before the airfilter I cannot imagine as it could affect performance.
Expert tuners, please your advise?

i believe that there is a EPA noise regulation that requires engine noise to be less that X Decibels. i read an article in an engineering mag regarding this and the hurdles manufacturers had to jump to comply.

want more noise? i put in my hacked intake box from my old LGT, the car has an awsome growl, and everyone knows there is a turbo inside.

Hey now why did you leave the hole open? What would happen if you closed it?

A secondary and less talked about function of the resonator/snorkel system is to get excess water out of the intake tract. The resonator acts as a catch can and allows collected moisture to drain out of the bottom.

I left it open so it is a secondary air entrance (better breathing if possible) and for eventual draining as supermarkus already indicated.

After testing on highways I've to say that the better sounds comes also with "I" mapping. Less but it comes if you accelerate WOT .

I'm not sure how moisture would drain out since the lip of the resonator jug is an inch and a half or so above the bottom of the box. It might give water more surface area to stick to before it gets to the filter but I can't imagine it being that dramatic...

just look at the path incoming air has to take, as the air rushes through the snorkel and resonator, water drops out of the flow path and accumulates in the resonator, there should be a drain hole at the bottom of the resonator. There has been in all of the Impreza resonators I've ever seen in the last 8 years.

I'm not nearly as experienced with Subarus as you, but I can tell you that the 2008 STI intake silencer is from the legacy, not the Impreza. Reading your post from my frame of reference of my 08, I'm not really following what you mean about dripping into the white jug. If any water did drip in there from the snorkel, it would be pure luck based on the design...

Here's a pic from my silencer disable

That having been said, I do seem to remember a small hole in the bottom of the jug, probably for drainage of moisture built up from condensation or from the airbox.
