Back into the dealer yesterday. They replaced the steering gear but the tech said he could still hear the noise slightly. A Suby Engineer was in the dealership today to take a look at it. They made some adjustments and they say the noise is fixed. I'll pick it up this afternoon and see!

Additionally, when talking to my service manager (i.e. The Middle Man) he said that the p/s fluid pressure in the '08 is greater than previous car )partly due to a redesign and partly to adjust the steering feeling). That greater pressure was likely causing blowby on a seal and causing p/s fluid to get into places it shouldn't be, somehow causing the whine.

Doing some hard driving this weekend so we'll see if it's really fixed.

So, I have noticed over the past 3 days of hard driving, with increasing outside air temps (high 80's and mid-90's), that if I take some good hard turns, at speed, that the sound I hear is coming from the rear of the vehicle. Brakes are not being applied during the turn, and there's nothing in the trunk to shift around. It is also not the sound of hitting the limits of traction, that is different and I've already done that. The sound is not a clunk, pop, or tapping. No lights come on in the dash either.
It does sound much more like when a diesel semi-truck starts up in first gear- a deep rumbling/grinding. I have just put mile 3000 on the car, and up until 3 days ago this sound was not evident. I typically drive the car in S#, Auto-, VDC off. I looked under the car and nothing is dragging.

I called dealer and going in monday to try to reproduce the sound with a tech in the car. Any thoughts?

Well, that sounds like differential noise to me, which is something I have grown accustomed to, although it does strike my ear as pretty "agricultural" at times.

FWIW, I had my car in and the verdict on my sound was that it is indeed mild brake dragging and is not abnormal for the Brembos. Repetitive clicking noises from pad movement is also apparently not unusual under certain conditions. OK by me, but I will be keeping an ear on it...

guys when you say VDC off is it "off, off" as in orange indicator or just "off" as in green indicator? If it's the later then stability control is still active and will be engaging brakes depending on over/under steer sensed by the VDC controller.

1) understeer - rear inside wheel brake actuated by VDC when drift to outside detected
2) oversteer - front and rear outside wheels brakes actuated by VDC when "spin" detected

This could explain some of the noises people are reporting

No... I mean off. Orange. Period. Besides, the speeds at which I hear noises are well short of the kind of cornering that the VDC would care about: maybe 0.5g.

any news? i have the same sound, but it gradually has gotten worse....but i work at the dealership so ill have them take a look. ill show a tech this thread, it may save some headache.

Well... my sound turned out to be brakes dragging and totally normal. However, if yours sounds more like power steering pump, I think Dante's post at then end of the first page is something you should look at. Maybe PM him for details.

My noise was reduced by 90% when they installed the new p/s pump, steering gear, and had a tech do some adjustments. I'm not positive that all three are nessesary though, maybe just one or two?
