Default Subaru fixing car "this time"

Hey guys, some of you may recall my smoking 08 sti thread. The car has been at the dealer for almost 3 weeks now. It was found that number 1 piston rings had failed due to being to lean. Subaru has replaced the piston and rings and has said nothing to me through the whole process. Today being a little fustrated, I went down to the dealer. The SM say's that subaru has evidence that the car was tampered with but they are going to cover it under waranty. They also told me that I'll have to sign a waiver before i get my car back, stating if I tamper with it again my warranty is gone. One thing I was wondering is how does only one piston fail in result of being too lean?

Not sure but did you tamper with it?? Accessport etc... That would suck if they could see if you did install something.,

IMO...I think the dealer (service tech in particular) found tampering on the ECU causing the piston #1 failure. They could trace it if they did a CHECK SUM on the car's ECU, if i'm not mistaken. That's if your car was reflashed. Just look into the bright side, SOA covered the cost.

His car wasnt stock..... he loaded the wrong map off of his ap. If I was him, I'd sign the paper and consider yourself lucky. Its just the luck of the draw on which piston went. Not all cylinders run the same afr.

Well I had a bad injector on my 05 sti that caused cylinder #2 to run lean. You could have had a bad injector. On a side note, carter subaru in seattle refused to do a compression check afterward. I am still biting my nails wondering if it did some damage.

Agreed on that. Your car wasnt stock. If you flashed the wrong map and screwed it up, I would also sign the paper and count your lucky stars it didnt cost you anything. Too bad you erased all your posts in the previous thread.. Wonder why.. hmm.

Duh, I was so exited to feel the beast from within i did not relize i flashed the wrong map.Result some how I blew the seals in the turbo and was smoking like a beater, and my intercooler and dp were covered with oil. The dealer is replacing the turbo at 2800 miles. A good lesson learned

I'd say Subaru did you a BIG favor if they knew your STi was modified and still fixed your car. Surprising, to say the least.

It's very easy. Lean means more heat and with you hitting fuel cut due to overboosting, you're looking at a LOT of stress on the pistons and probably even suffered a large knock event which cracked the piston ring. Unfortunately, the piston rings in our cars are the weakest link.

Exactly. Subaru is well known for giving you a "one time" fix when they know you've tinkered with the car. I've heard of them replacing engine blocks, turbos, axles, and pistons that were broken from modding, which is extremely generous of them. To me that is damn nice of them and the OP should be signing that paper right away.

Seriously, everyone here should take note. If you are going to mod, you should be prepared for something to go wrong and therefore have the cash to fix it.

That's why I stay completely stock, I do all my recommended maintenance on time, and I won't even put an ap stage1 on the car if something is broken, it is due to no fault of my own.

You don't experience a "knock" due to running lean....you're probably trying to explain a ping or detonation (pre-ignition). Knock comes from messed up rod bearings.

Detonation and pre-ignition are not the same. Knock is often used to describe a detonation. If his motor pre-ignited, he would be looking at a new block and head, because the top of the piston or the piston itself would litteraly melt. In his case, the ring land gave way, which means his engine pinged/knocked/detonated over a long period of time.
