Doesn't it release upon clutch movement?

I got used to it. My wife's '06 Forester has the same, except hers holds forever (till the clutch comes out) instead of just ~5 seconds.

Nope, it's on a timer.

On a big hill, when I'm expecting it to activate it doesn't bother me. When it catches me and makes me look like a jerk is when I'm barely on an incline, and I slowly roll off the clutch to pull away, and the brakes hold me back causing a stall or a lurch off the line.

I didn't buy a 305 horsepower $35,000 sports car that is only offered in 6 speed because I'm a rookie manual trans driver.

Ok... I dont own an 08 and I dont know anything about this Hill-Assist. But, I have an idea for you guys. However its based on the assumption that this feature is automatically activated when the car starts rolling backward after releasing the brake pedal. Well how about trying to stop it from rolling backward by holding the E-brake up before you release the brake and then engaging the clutch and slowly releasing the E-brake as you start to move forward.

This was the way I used to launch from a dead stop on a hill, when I first learned how to drive Manual, it was a trick taught to me by my dad. This will only prevent the car from rolling backward and it will only be a temporary way to by-pass the Hill Assist if it is activated by what I said above, which is a backward roll after releasing the brake. If it uses Gyro-meters or some other fluid level system then you guys are on your own with that. Some one may have to find the electronic mechanism and disable it by removing a relay or fuse.

Good luck
Jay

That's not how it works at all. It doesn't allow you to roll back. It detects an incline and holds the brake for you for a set amount of time, and doesn't release just because you are hitting the gas or releasing the clutch. It holds the car back if you try to leave from a stop quickly.

Yeah this pretty much annoys the **** out of me also. I usually just try to watch the lights/traffic and time things so that I've already waited out the 'hill-assist' delay before it's time to actually let the clutch all the way out.

i was trying to pull out of a shopping centre and traffic was heavy so i was looking for any opportunity to pull out, i even made sure that the trac. con. was off. the parking lot i was pulling out of was only slightly lower than the road so a very small incline that was probably the length of my car. so i see an opening and decide to take it and bam! car stalls and now i am 1/4 of the way onto the road with a stalled car because this stupid start assist. luckily people were paying attention and everyone slowed down before i had to test the side impact protection on my car. i actually get nervous when i have to stop on a hill with this car. i shouldn't have to time the lights. i hate this feature.

There's basically 2 ways to drive a manual.

1. Let the clutch out a little until you start to feel it engage, give it a little throttle input and then continue to let the clutch out.

2. Rev the car to about 2K rpm and then just let the clutch out slowly.

I was taught to drive the first way, and if you do it that way with uphill start assist on you will stall it every time. You have to use the 2nd method with the start assist to prevent stalling.

The biggest issue I have with the stupid start assist is that I never know when it's on so I never know how to launch my car. I have a ton of hills by my house but most of them are gradual hills so I'm never sure when it's on. There should be a warning light or something. I have to let off the brake to see if it's on.

Hopefully the start assist is a module that can be bypassed and not part of the ABS or something.
