I emailed SOA and they said there's no way to disable it. Maybe they can come up with something or someone can figure out how to wire up a fix to trick the incline sensor or something.

Ever try parallel parking on a hill? Yea, this feature sucks.

If it is just a solenoid that triggers to maintain the brake pressure, then theoretically, you should be able to disable it. The fact that the ECU or other control system can disable the hill assist if it detects a failure tells me you can disable it. I think I'm going to have to download the service manual and start looking at the wiring diagram for the hill assist "unit". I wouldn't even mind seeing the warning light on if it meant that the system was disabled.

When I take my car in to the local suby gurus for a tune in a few weeks I will ask them to take a look at it if nobody knows if it can be turned off by then.

There are two reasons I want this gone:

1) It is semi unpredictable. Sometimes I'm on an incline that should be steep enough to activate it but it doesn't. Other times it will activate on an incline that is incredibly shallow, like my garage...

2) There is one intersection near where I live that is on an incline. The hill assist makes it very annoying to make a left turn in traffic. One to two seconds can make a big difference. I don't need this stupid hill assist to hold me back.

Anyone else notice that the hill assist will actually engage if you are pointing downhill? I was parked on a decline and when I went to reverse the car wouldn't move until about two seconds later. I can reproduce this everytime in this one parking spot.

I'm actually considering writing a letter to Subaru Canada to tell them that I want a solution to disable the hill assist, primarily due to reason number two, listed above. No car should ever stop you from being able to make a turn across traffic...ever. I've never had an accident with another car and I could easily see this causing one. It's a very bad feature in my opinion.
What he said.

I dont see what the big deal is. Sometimes it works on my car, just really depends on how big the incline is.

So you don't think it is a big deal when trying to merge from an incline into heavy traffic or turn across traffic from an incline that the car won't move on command due to the hill assist activating?

I've never needed hill assist in any of the manuals I've driven. While it isn't a massive issue, it is one of those excessively annoying features that adds little value.

Yeah, the fact that it is unpredictable means it's dangerous, not just annoying. I haven't picked up my STI yet, but this already bugs me.

Does it still activate if you're using the e-brake like any other evolved human being?

don't press hard the brake pedal.
i always stop at hill road, i press the brake with minimum pressure to stop the car at up-hill. (
hill-start assist need certain point of brake pressure.
so if you do not press brake pedal hard, the assist not working.

try it, i never use hill-start assist since i knew this trick.

I just put er in neutral and stay off the clutch. Even if on a hill, you and let go of the brake, the clutch, put it gear, and go. Hill assist doesn't activate because I have no brake pressure with the clutch in.

The guy at the window tint shop stalled it driving it into the shop. It was 100% the hill holder's fault. He was like "Dude somthing's weird with your brakes. I NEVER stall, and it just didn't want to go." I said "Don't worry about it, it that damn hill assist feature."

Yeah this feature is total crap.

I went to launch off a light with a mustang next to me the other day and looked like a dumb*** when he took off and I creeped/bucked away from the line.

It even activates at my parking spot at work which I swear is flatter than Selma Blair. WTF???

Not to be repetitive but I did not by a $40,000 sports car to learn to drive in. this feature is stupid, dangerous, inconvenient, and does not a single thing to draw people to the car.

I would SERIOUSLY pay money to whoever figures out a way around it.

Agreed - and what about when this "feature" happens to activate on the drag strip?

I just adjusted the hill assist valve cable on my girlfriend's 08 forester, which took me five minutes and now the hill assist is almost imperceptible. Waay better. I imagine the system must be similar on imprezas. Here is where I found out how to do it:Hill Holder Clutch info - ScoobyMods
