It's a coincidence that you are seeing that it releases with the clutch.

I own both types of hill holders, Forester and 08 STI.
My forester is truly on the clutch(mechanical solution), of which requires fine adjusting, if off a little.

The 08 STI uses the VDC system for this(software solution)

OMG what a retarded feature... on a STi no less? why don't they just have a tampon dispenser in the console be done with it.

What I do. Not a big deal once you get over the initial shock.

can you just snip the wires going to the "g" sensor or is that tied to the VDC system?

Wow, I've seriously not had a single problem with mine. Yeah, I'll be on the throttle with a tiny bit of clutch slippage before the brakes disengage, but I totally don't mind the system. I could care less if it was there or not, but I haven't had issues or stalled so whatever.

i mentioned this in another post. But what happens in an emergency when you need let off the brake and roll. For example, when the car in front of you is rolling back on an incline?

When I was trying to disconnect my ground off my nav I placed it in a bad spot and did not ground properly. Since then my ebrake light has been on constantly and the hill-assist has been disabled.....

Yeah this really sucks....

I lost major bucks on countless UPHILL DRAG races....

I didn't pay 40 K for this car so I can be safe and comfortable....

REAL MAN DON'T NEED NO VDC OR ABS...or air bags, seatbelts, A/C, radio, vanity mirrors, power windows, power locks, power steering....

F-you subaru !

I was taught to drive the first way, and if you do it that way with uphill start assist on you will stall it every time. You have to use the 2nd method with the start assist to prevent stalling.

The biggest issue I have with the stupid start assist is that I never know when it's on so I never know how to launch my car. I have a ton of hills by my house but most of them are gradual hills so I'm never sure when it's on. There should be a warning light or something. I have to let off the brake to see if it's on.

Hopefully the start assist is a module that can be bypassed and not part of the ABS or something.
I agree with you a thousand percent. If it was on all the time it would be something you could learn to live with, but it seems to activate on the slightest of inclines when there's no need to.

I wonder if there's some calibration possible, because I have only ever had mine kick in when I was on a legitimate hill, and even then it doesn't impede my launching the car. I actually like it - and my wife loves it.

I really want this feature gone. For the most part it is relatively transparent, but as an experienced manual driver, one to two seconds of waiting is too long. As someone else said, having hill assist isn't going to encourage non-manual drivers to buy the car.

There are two reasons I want this gone:

1) It is semi unpredictable. Sometimes I'm on an incline that should be steep enough to activate it but it doesn't. Other times it will activate on an incline that is incredibly shallow, like my garage...

2) There is one intersection near where I live that is on an incline. The hill assist makes it very annoying to make a left turn in traffic. One to two seconds can make a big difference. I don't need this stupid hill assist to hold me back.

Anyone else notice that the hill assist will actually engage if you are pointing downhill? I was parked on a decline and when I went to reverse the car wouldn't move until about two seconds later. I can reproduce this everytime in this one parking spot.

I'm actually considering writing a letter to Subaru Canada to tell them that I want a solution to disable the hill assist, primarily due to reason number two, listed above. No car should ever stop you from being able to make a turn across traffic...ever. I've never had an accident with another car and I could easily see this causing one. It's a very bad feature in my opinion.
