IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2004 Trader Rating: (0) | crazy. but the starter motor screech just happened to me for the first time today. I have 25K miles on the Odo. I quickly turned the key back to off then started the car up normally. i plan to just sit back and see what develops out of it. weird. This ad is not endorsed by this member. IWSTI Addict since: Dec 2007 Trader Rating: (0) | When I went into the dealership about a year ago to test drive a new 07 STi, I heard what I would guess is the same sound you are hearing. The salesman went to start the car and bring it around for a test drive, and I heard this horrible screeching sound on his first attempt - unlike any sound I had ever heard coming from a car. After a pause, his second attempt started the car without trouble. Despite being a bit red-faced, he dismissed the sound as "not a problem" and gave no explanation. After hearing that sound, I quickly lost interest in that car (despite the fact I loved the test drive), although I'd still like to know what caused it. |

IWSTI Addict since: Feb 2007 Trader Rating: (0) | Exactly - the bendix isn't pushing the drive gear all the way into a mesh with the flywheel teeth, so it just spins and the edges of the two gear grind on each other. Is there an inspection hole in a subaru bell housing? You should see evidence on the flywheel teeth if this is happening; if you can see it show it to the dealer, it should be pretty cut and dry evidence of what is happening. |

IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2007 Trader Rating: (0) | I know this is an 08 thread but my 07's done this about three times now. Is it something I need to be concerned about? Have you guys had to replaced anything yet? |

IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2003 Trader Rating: (0) | My '08 no longer does this. The week I requested that my dealership order a new starter, the issue went away. It's been a couple months now and it hasn't happened again. Weird. |

IWSTI Addict since: Mar 2006 Trader Rating: (0) | my car does this about once a month. it is not consistent with weather conditions, sit time, or anything really. have probably had it happen about 20 times in the last 2 years. every time it happens i cringe but the car always starts on the second try. i really wish this problem would be addressed from subaru if the 08's are also having this problem. |

IWSTI Addict since: Jun 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | I just joined the club today, ran into safeway for a few things, car sat maybe 5min. On turning the key I got the gawd-awful screeching/grinding. Turned a few heads in the carpark thats for sure. turned the key off and back on again, started without issue.Hope i'm not going to see this again, i'm sure others were thinking i was a right tool, to get a noise that bad from a new car. I'm innocent |

| Silver Member | Awwww crap, mine just did it twice yesterday. No problems today, but I searched and found this thread. I have 30k on the odo so I don't want a bunch of issues to start developing..... |

| Lurker | so my car started doing something weird on start up.. at times it won't even make a noise.. i would have to remove the key and put it back in to get it to start.. so i took it in and got a code to reprogram all my keys.. seems to have got rid of the weird noise problem too..
