Usually I average around 18.6 mpg. This morning I drove it to the office like a semi and got 27.0 (actually peaked at 29.1). This if a 19-mile mostly highway drive, quite flat overall, with some stop-and-go traffic. I was VERY proud of myself. When I got to the office I did some calculations...

Based on $4.75 a gallon gas, I just saved myself $1.51. I am trying to decide:

1) How much is the enjoyment of the drive worth? Would I pay $1.51 so I can zip around and zoom zoom to work?

2) When I extrapolated this figure out to a month, figuring 4 days a week of gentle driving and allowing for fun Fridays (when traffic is lighter and temptation is greater), it comes out to about $50 of savings.

What's $50 spread over a month? That's not even a full tank of gas. And frankly, I would have a hard time noticing that 50 bucks in my overall budget for the entire month.

I'm kind of leaning toward the conclusion that all this mild driving to save gas doesn't benefit me much. I'm gonna try it some more though.

My car just turned 10,000 miles today, and the average was 26.1 according to the funky gauge on the dash (I think it's pretty close)?

It's not all that accurate and it resets every time you clear the trip odo. I find the dash gauge to be about 1.2mpg optimistic.

Like I and others have said, your terrain, elevation, and weather play a huge role. 90+ degree temps make for high mpgs.

Im running Perrin Stg 1 93, in I mode. 55mph, driving exactly like Hawkeye stated.

For me, its not about the money, its about saving the gas. And driving this way yields great gas savings, with some play room on weekends, its perfect.

I agree with you waktasz, I find the dash mpg to be about 1 or so optimistic

I did a bit of light hypermiling today on the way to work. ~59 miles @ 30.6MPG average. Pissed off one guy that felt the need to scream at me.

Basically sea level, ~72 degrees, probably a bit more downhill than uphill.

What's your route? What freeway do you normally drive on to work? How do you avoid getting shot at?

I take 94 to the Lodge to get to school at non-peak hours which helps. The white people are the scariest to drive around, the blacks don't seem to mind.

I must not be breaking mine in gently enough! I'm getting ~14.5 on the little dash gauge, all local, now on my second tank.

I average 19 and I drive pretty hard. I drive 36 miles of highway each day and about 10 city miles. Driving to and from work is the best part of my day.

I think it is encouraging to see some of the members getting what I would call pretty decent fuel economy (25+) with these high performance vehicles. Granted that is driving it like a grandma but sometimes concessions need to be made. Congrats all,

Smile Re: I didn't buy it for the gas milage...but?

I play with mine a lot - sometimes it is a game to see how high I can get the gauge to read, sometimes I pretend the gauge isn't there and drive it like I stole it.

I've actually found very little difference in my overall mileage. I reset the gauge at each fillup (and I've found that the gauge is low by 1.5 mpg on average) and almost always have 20.4 mpg at the end of the tank. Pump calculations usually yield 22mpg. This is 'normal' driving on Long Island (every light is a drag strip, the main rule in driving is trying to screw the guy next to you, and roads go from two lanes to one everywhere so you have ample opportunity to mess with other drivers) and many full-throttle runs through the gears on off and on ramps.

I did a road trip to maine last week. 3 200+ lb guys and 200 lbs of gear, doing 80-85 mph with the AC on yielded a gauge reading of 22.1 mpg. I didn't think that was bad at all. And this was all heading north - you get worse mileage heading north since it is uphill on a map..
