HYPERMILERS W00T W00T!!

100+ hypermiling / ecodriving tips to increase gas mileage - EcoModder.com

Saw this on the news the other day. These guys are addicted to getting huge MPG numbers. Yeah, most of 'em drive hybrids...but they have some tips for the rest of us.

Take #28, for example: Minimize idling when stopped - If you're going to be stopped for more than a few seconds, shift to neutral and shut off your engine. This is one of the main reasons hybrid vehicles get such good fuel economy in urban driving.

Or #46: Drive without brakes - Minimize use of the brake pedal. Each time you press it, you're effectively converting gasoline into brake dust and heat. Driving as if you have no brakes will cause you to do two things: 1) reduces 'excessive' acceleration, and, 2) extends the amount of time you spend coasting down to stops and turns.

Yeah, some are stupid. But some are practical. I tried some out & am still collecting data (05, cobb stage 1 CA 91 map). My biggest problem is that I keep thinking, "I didn't buy THIS car to drive it THAT way."

It's a balance. If I was getting on the car in every gear, all the time, it'd get pretty boring.

It's fun to get to work, which is about 44 miles away, and have the display say "30MPG," which is probably what I was getting in my Civic going 80MPH.

It's also fun to see it saying "9MPG" when I want to have some fun.

Sad to say I'm turning into a MPG whore in a "STi" Feel so happy when I get 25mpg these days. I do flip it into S# on the on ramp and passes, but I don't see why you don't want to use I mode when you are just cruising down the highway. Love it when my buddies tell me "That's bull$hit, you can't get 25mpg on an STi" granted I drive on the street half the time. They average about 18-20

Letting the car just coast in gear on a downhill uses the least amount of gas. It's probably less than keeping it in neutral.

I've had my 2008 STI since late February. It performs in many ways, not the least of which, is its ability to obtain good gas mileage. The photo is from late April as can be seen. The lifetime average mileage is now 27.0.

I don't know how that's possible, but good job. The best I get, even crawling on the highway at 55mph is 24. Cruising at normal speeds is more like 22-23.

I get about 26ish average...mostly highway. I've gotten ~30 once indicated on the AVG MPG (Which I have found to be pretty accurate) by driving using cruise at about 50mph for about 50 miles....I took a pic on my cell phone, I will figure out how to load it up sometime. I usually get about 18mpg city, but most (~95%) of my driving is highway.

I should post my sustained 33.3mpg

Roads, weather and a ton of factors determine best mpg. When its 90 out I can get 37 easy at 55, but when it 50 out, I can barely squeeze 28

What? How?...I just can't believe 37 mpg on an STI. I want to know how! Are you running the fuel econ map from Cobb? I've always wondered what king of mpg people get from those maps anyway....

How I achieved my mileage:

Break In
1. Gentle to moderate acceleration during the break in period. Very easy on the car for the first 100 miles.
2. Kept to Subaru's recommendation and did not exceed 4000 rpm during the first 1000 miles.
3. Changed the oil at 1000 miles. Replaced the oil with Mobil 1 and installed a Subaru OEM filter.
4. I believe that a gentle and precise mating of moving engine parts optimizes later engine power and fuel economy. I think the two go hand in hand.

Driving
1. Context: I use my STI as a daily driver for a 52 mile round trip commute from Carmel, IN to downtown Indianapolis. The trip is about 3/4 interstate (mostly free flowing) and 1/4 suburban/rural.
2. I drive the speed limit in the right hand lane and get passed a lot. This is the single most important contributor to good gas mileage. I've observed that Increasing speed from 55 mph to 65 mph decreases mileage around 10%.
3. I generally keep the STI in "I" drive and shift when "I" drive signals. The shifts will come between 2000 and 2500 rpm. Sometimes lower. "I" mode is not responsive. That is why "S" and "S#" are a twist away. I am always pleasantly surprised when I engage "S".
4. Coast to stops in gear. Minimize the use of the brakes and drive smoothly.
5. Minimize the use of A/C.
6. Park quickly and pull out of parking spots.
7. I do not turn the engine off at stop lights and I do not draft other vehicles.

You guys also have to consider terrain and elevation. My drive to work is a lot more "down hill" than my drive home, so naturally I can attain much better gas mileage on my way to work.

I managed 28 mpg today on a 140 mile round trip drive. 25 of those miles were with 4 people in the car. Leaving it in I and using neutral when going down hill and accelerating gently makes a big difference. Also, fuel makes a huge difference. Sunoco 93 runs better in this car then pretty much anything else I've used.

It's not as immediately fun as hammering the piss out of things but upping mpg is a rather fun challenge in itself.
