Anyone watch the Top Gear episode where they got 800miles out of an Audi A8 Turbo Diesel on a single tank of gas? Now that is insane!

Personally, where I live there are stop and go spots even on many main roads and to get to the highways requires some of that. Plus, PA is quite hilly, so you take all that together and I'm getting around 18-25mpg depending on what I'm doing and where I'm going.

lol... I was out in CO on vacation. I25 is so friggin flat! It's like driving through Kansas! I'm pretty sure any car if driven w/o using the brakes and running into traffic will get some nice numbers on that road.

filled up a fresh tank of 91 today.
reset the trip meter, drove to works just like every other day. when i got there, my average mpg was 23.1! this has never ever happened before this is combined residential, stop&go freeway, and some "slow" freeway driving - around 65 or so.

usually, i average around 19mpg combined. maybe it's the cooler weather we're getting now. who knows.

If you stay out of boost, even w/ stop and go you can still manage some nice #s I've noticed. I was up to 24mpg driving through a couple small towns at very low speeds w/ lots of stop and go. Then I go out of the town and on the back roads and down went the fuel economy.

well, the thing is... i do this every single day. and i NEVER saw +20mpg on my commute to work. even on days that traffic was light and i could cruise in 6th (the 20% residential roads usually kill my mileage)

but today, i got about 4mpg more than i was expecting

on my drive home (+80F) i got my usual crap mileage again. i'm guessing that cold mornnig tems we're having now are getting me better mileage, all other things are the same.

I often start a full tank great, maybe 28+, but by the time i'm near empty, I'm usually at 22mpg

I went on a road trip this weekend though the kangmagus highway in New Hamsire up to Maine., I was getting 23.7 ripping gears going 60 to 80 the whole trip, I was happy with the mpg's. Did about 1000 miles all weekend.

ok So I Wanted to know the MPG potential of my STi using the on-board display. For that I did a small experiment using a FULLY STOCK STi and the following conditions:

1. A/C off
2. Windows completely up
3. Same stretch of straight flat road every time (3 miles long)
4. Cruise control On
5. The trip meter would star at 0 and end at 3 miles

Here are the results for various speeds

At 60 mph ----> 27.0MPG

At 50 mph ----> 31.5MPG

At 45 mph ----> 33.6MPG

At 40 mph ----> Never tried (but mpg starts to decrease after some point)

Road Conditions:

Conclusion:

If your up for it, you can get pretty decent MPG out of your 305hp sports car. I do drive down the road at 45mph now and then cus' there are no cars around me and most of the time I'm in no hurry to get home.

Those are ideal conditions: flat road, you're only measuring on the highway, and it was about 80 degrees.

The problem is real driving conditions are nothing like that. You have to drive TO the highway, which usually includes a bunch of city-type driving. No highway is perfectly flat for a long distance, and the cold weather is coming for some of us.

This test hasn't uncovered the 'potential MPG' of your car at all. Hell, I could put my car on jack stands, and run it for the equivalent of 3 miles, report back with some numbers, and they'd be equally relevant in the real world.

Yes, it's possible to get relatively decent gas mileage out of the car, but it takes discipline, and the proper conditions. In the real world no one will be averaging higher than 25MPG. And that's already pretty high. The EPA "combined" estimate you find on the window sticker is very accurate. I'm always right around it for my EVO, and the same was true for my STI.

Lol it sure does show something. It shows the difference the speeds mean to overall mpg over that stretch of land. If it didnt "uncover the potential mpg" then why did the mpg get higher the slower he went? :| Dont hate.

I see some confusion so let me clarify:

- I DO WANTED ideal conditions on the test.
- Believe it or not those are my driving conditions for 15 out my 17 mile trip to work (Good or Bad).

- Since I'm a real person driving on a real road I believe that makes it REAL DRIVING.
- By no means I was trying to get a DAILY DRIVING average, that's EPA's job.

- I don't know other people, but I didn't knew my car could do 33 MPG (according to on-board display) at 45 mph.
- Finally: Putting your car on stands is perfectly valid. In fact it would give an even more accurate read of the POTENTIAL MPG of the car if we were to drive without wind resistance or road friction.

I beg to differ. I currently have about 9000 miles on my 08 STI most of which it has been at stage 1. For the life of the car I am averaging just under 25mpg. I have seen as high as 29mpg on a tank of gas and last month I drove 2700 miles and averaged 26.77mpg. Every month I have owned the car, my mileage has been increasing. I really do think I can get my average mileage up to around 26-27. This mileage is calculated using the tripodometer and gallons at fillup. I have found the digital readout in the car to always be slightly higher than my calculated mileage. On 100% highway, driving 55-60, I have seen as high as 32mpg on the readout.

I guess I don't see why potential gas mileage is important unless it's relative to realistic conditions. Putting it on jack stands wouldn't prove anything, especially considering the car isn't moving.

I saw this thread more as a go-to for real world performance, not the engine's potential to minimize fuel consumption in ideal (unrealistic) conditions.

My 2 cents have been delivered.
