Global warming..........Hogwash!

I had the same mindset when I decided to give up my 25-28mpg stage 2 wrx for the STI in March.

I still agree with what you say and treat the car well. The only time that I have had to just shake my head in disgust is having to pay near 4.50$... if it stays around 3.50 - 4.25 a gallon I am all about running it hard. I don't drive enough and when I do I can afford to waste a tank a week on the weekends.

I can keep a fairly consistent 29 MPG with my 400 miles of commuting a week. My best was 33ish and my worst was about 3. All depends on how much I stomp on it and when I shift.

So I decided to do my own test. I have about a ±15 mile commute to the office. I filled with gas about ½ mile from the highway entrance and kept my speeds between 55 and 65 the entire way up the highway. Upon exiting the highway:

I believe it is possible for our STIs to get incredible mileage, but why? It is freaking boring!!

EDIT: I'm in Denver (high altitude) running 91 octane, Cobb Stage 1 map, S#.

When I run that same test, I can only squeeze out 22mpg tops.

That number is insane, I just filled mine with a 50:50mix of 91 and 100 (just for a try, figured that was worth resetting the odometer for), and after ~100miles i'm showing 15.3. No highway, fwiw I liked my old number better, averaged over 2000miles, it stayed at 18 no matter what i did.

No doubt your commute is downhill. What do you get going the other direction?

Honestly it's not downhill. I was just very, very mellow on the fun pedal - basically no turbo use at all and coasting whenever possible. Please understand, I don't drive this way. I did this simply as an experiment to see what I could get. If you (or anyone else knows Denver) this was from the Lincoln on ramp of I-25 North (Lincoln in Douglas County) to the Broadway/Lincoln (that's kind of funny) exit in Denver. I took the picture at the light at the end of the exit. I then drove ±1 mile to my office on city streets, and when I got to the office it was 33.4. As I idled there for a sec, it dropped to 33.1.

Some people are going to want more details on my car, so...I drove the first 70 miles mellow (3 complete heat cycles) and then hard from there out. I have an AP which I got at 500 miles when I changed the oil. As I mentioned previously, I'm running Cobb 91 Oct Stage 1, but it overboosts all the time, so I'm adding Cobb's Catted Downpipe and a Protune on Saturday (can't wait). I achieved this mileage on Auto -, S# with the A/C on. I can pretty much assure people that I most likely will never see that again, but it was sort of fun for a day!

Trust me, add consistent 300 mile trips up north (MI), and some audio books, it becomes quite the adventure, and you end up listening to a lot of book!

Sorry Denver, it is downhill. I25 loses 750 feet elevation between the two exits you describe according to topo maps. Drive it the other way and report back.

I truly had no idea. I was thinking about that as I typed it and I figured it was a bit down hill, but I was guessing much less than that. Anyway, apologies for the error...I didn't know.

At some point I will run the same test the other way and post here what I get. Traffic is already too heavy to do it tonight (stop and go all the way). I bet from Silverthorne to Denver I could get over 40! lol My one problem is that the car gets the DP and Protune tomorrow which would change the accuracy of the test. That said, I'll do it anyway.

Yeah, I figured as much. It's only about 1% and very steady according to the bike routing tool I use (bikeroutetoaster.com) so you could easily not notice in a car. I've learned not to trust my impressions unless I've ridden a route on my bicycle My guess is you'll get something like 20 going the other way.

FWIW, it's really curvy and hilly here and when I try hard I can average over 20, but that's not why I bought the car to drive on these roads. I figure driving the way I like (which gets me 15-16 mpg) costs me 10-15 bucks more every 200 miles which is cheap entertainment as far as I'm concerned. My wife, who is very German (and very "green") only just tolerates this on the other hand

For her, i've promised the next car (to replace a Saturn LS2 I inherited... and hate) will be a 2009 Fit.

My wife has a Murano and loves it except she wishes it were faster

I will do the MPG test at some point and report back. I'm guessing I can still get upper 20s, but we shall see.
