Default oil change

My first oil change-I drained oil and installed new filter- I followed the owners manual and put in 4.2 qts oil (4qts, 7oz). After I started engine, checked oil level and it looks low. Dipstick is a little hard to read also. Does anyone have any input on if I used the correct amount of oil?

To get it to read full, I allways end up using almost 5 full quarts (prolly 4.75)...

Read the owners manual again like steelgray06 said, I'm sure it doesn't include the filter. In mine I don't waste my time measuring 4.75 or so, I put the hole thing in there.

I vaguely remember.. But, I remember a few years ago on this forum that the 4.2 Quarts was a misprint within the owners manual.

I have found that 4.5 quarts seems to bring it to the FULL mark on the dip stick, the owners manual and my Subaru dealer service dept. say it is 4.2 quarts with a filter change. I cannot understand how there can be so much confusion.

The first time I changed mine, I used 4.5 qts and put about 1/3 in the filter itself and it seemed overfull, but hard to tell since I was using Mobil 1. The next time I changed I used conventional and used 4.2 qts and filled the filter up and it reads right at the full circle. Conventional oil coats the dipstick better than synthetics from what Ive noticed.

According to the service manual, for 2008 STi oil capacity:

When replacing engine oil and oil filter:
Litres - US qt - Imp qt
4.3 - 4.5 - 3.8

When replacing engine oil only:
Litres - US qt - Imp qt
4.0 - 4.2 - 3.5

Oh, and torque on the oil drain plug is 32.5 ft-lbs. (remember to use a new gasket).

what side of the crush washer goes where? like one side of the crush washer is tapered and the other side is flat...im guessing the tapered side goes to the oil pan and the flat side goes towards the bolt?
