Default 08 STI same DCCD problem as the previous year??

Any body started playing with the DCCD control on the 08 STI yet??? I read alot abt this issue on the previous models.

Have anybody set the DCCD to Manual=LOCK and start steering all the way to either side?? car make terrible clunking noises and is impossible to drive.

If this function is this bad why is this DCCD Lock mode for??? only works when going straight...

It makes that noise because it works. It's "locking" the center differential. Why one would want to do that is beyond me but I'm sure someone will have a good reason

It is obvious you do not have a complete understanding of what the dccd does and why it does it.

If you do some searching you can find a tread that will tell you everything you want to know about the dccd.

It helps in the mud, and other poor driving conditions where grip is needed.

ive only had my car in LOCKED once, and that was when i was trying to climb my driveway in a huge blizzard. So... ~20feet. Other then that kep it in auto 99.9% of the time thats what is required.

It's not HORRIBLE for it, if you use it in the right cases. It's not suppose to be used for driving daily, just kinda getting out of stuck situations or as stated above you need all wheels to spin at the SAME time.

It is perfectly acceptable to play with the settings on your diff. You will not hurt your car by doing so if you use common sense.

Locking of the diff is intended for low traction situations, not while turning sharply to park your car. Works great for fun in dirt and snow.

Opening it will help you get the rear to step out.

Different spots in the middle aid cornering in low-grip situations.

It all just matters what you are doing with your car.

Our DCCD rocks. I love playing with it in the right situations. (I don't think that came out right)

As others have already mentioned this is how the DCCD works in LOCK. Think of it this way. When locked, the centre diff is trying to keep the front and rear wheels spinning at the same rate. If you make a sharp turn the front wheels are turning more than the rear and the centre diff is trying to prevent this and this results in binding. Basically use lock if you are stuck or in any other extremely low traction situation.

Read the manual on how to use it! You should only use full lock when you are on gravel, snow, or any other surface that will allow the inside or outside wheels to turn/spin to keep up with each other when you are turning. When a car goes around a turn, the inside wheels are spinning faster than the outside wheels. If the diff is locked, the inside and outside wheels want to spin at the same rate, and if you are on a surface with grip it won't allow each wheel to spin at the same rate, thus creating bind.

You don't lock the front hubs on a 4WD when on dry pavement. You don't lock the center diff on dry pavement for the same reasons. Doesn't matter if it's a Subaru or other brand.

The front/rear LSDs in the 08 STI will allow the inside and outside wheels to spin at different rates regardless of the DCCD setting. As has already been mentioned, it's the fact that the rear wheels will take a shorter line through the corner than the fronts, so the fronts have to spin more than the rears.

And locking the DCCD is great in deep snow - I was TRYING to get stuck, and couldn't. DCCD locked, SI-drive in I (yes, I-mode does help on snow/ice - you can have too much power there), and the car just kept going until I was pushing a pretty big snow-bank along. Eventually it was too much to push, but I just reversed a little and went around the pile. You'd have to slide the car into deep snow sideways to have a chance at getting it stuck.
