I'll add that tranny noise is significantly higher on mine than it is on my '02 5-speed. The '02 is all about suspension NVH and engine sounds- the tranny can barely be heard with all that other stuff going on (stripped interior!). But this STI just has a noisy tranny IMHO. Wonder what the EVO and GT-R trannies are like?

Yeah, I noticed the same thing. What's up with that? It surges a little when throttling off at low speed. At first I thought it was the squishy motor mounts, but it doesn't feel like the motor is moving around when this happens. Definitely a fueling thing. Maybe another anomoly in the stock tune? Does the accessport tune fix it? Sorry for the OT post.

Back on topic! I noticed that the deceleration grinding noise happens intermittently at idle in neutral (with the clutch engaged, foot off the pedal) as well. Additionally, it happens if you blip the throttle in neutral, when the revs fall. Disengaging the clutch makes the noise stop, of course. Turn off the AC/fan, close the windows and stick your ear close to the shift knob. I have the kartboy bushings, so the noise is more pronounced on mine. It's a really awful unhealthy sound in neutral. Makes me want to have a transmission shop inspect it if SOA won't do anything about it. Last thing I want is to have my transmission blow up on the track.

I actually like the audible tranny noise. Sounds like the WRC counterpart a little. When I drove my friends around, they thought I modified the tranny already.

What gets me worried is that "shower" noise I get when I turn the wheels while I park the car in the garage. Sounds like water passing through a pipe. Whatever it is, I think it's coming from the power steering or...

Maybe the A/C's building up water and draining out all at once, or maybe the cabin heater/radiator is sloshing around?

I don't really mind a loud tranny, although I like the boxer rumble more, and the tranny drowns it out. The sound worries me a bit because idling in neutral is so slow and low load that the gears should mesh perfectly and not make any noises.

I'll add that I also noticed the weird noises off-throttle and when I'm loading the engine in decelleration. I'll have to listen some more- only driven the car 20 miles so far!

My car does the same thing. I don't think it is an issue to worry about something breaking, as much as just being annoying.
