| Amateur STI Driver | I can hear it when it is very cold. Thanks for this thread. I always thought is was something like a heat shield rattling around on the catalytic converter until I saw this thread and pressed the clutch in - it completely disappears. | Lurker | Get yourself a VW with a dual-mass flywheel... now those cars have throw-out bearing problems. I can feel the clutch pedal jumping/pulsing on my TDI. The STI is like a dream compared to that. |

| Authorized Vendor | As an update to this thread, the noise has almost completely disappeared on my car now. I have jsut over 3100 miles on it now and have not really heard it in a couple weeks. Tony |

If it was a bad throw-out bearing you would know it!! Check me if I'm wrong guy's ? Last edited by Giant; 04-03-2008 at 03:06 PM. Reason: Add info |

| Authorized Vendor | That could make sense as I have heard that the 08 trans no longer has the oil pump in it to circulate the trans fluid. have not confirmed that yet, but in looking at the trans there are some slight differences in design. One being, there is no longer a dip stick!!! Don't know how we are going to fill and check fluid level now. Haven't really looked into it more. It could be on the other side now. Tony |

| Professional STI Racer | Yeah, the no-dipstick thing blew my mind like the second day I had the car. Went to do a standard all fluids check and Wha!??!! A plug! I wonder how this'll play out. -rain- |

| Grassroots STI Racer | That hydraulic self test is the emissions air pump. As for the throw out bearing, yes mine does it. If Im not mistaken the temperature is not a factor for me. It can be duplicated pretty much anytime. My old 2007 G35 sedan had the same issue. |

IWSTI Addict since: Feb 2008 Trader Rating: (0) | My Subaru mechanic stated that it is a pump in the engine compartment that makes the noise until it is warmed up. It annoys the hell out of me, but there is no way around it. Anyone having 2nd gear pop out when downshifting?? |

| Amateur STI Driver | I was greatly bothered with this noise, and it is clearly the transmission and not some hydraulic or emissions pump. It goes away with the clutch depressed and it is more prevalent in cooler weather. Sounds crappy, but I have no issues with functionality. A bit disappointing, especially when combined with the brake grind that happens on occassion. |

| Spec C Club | Same here. It comes and goes. Only does it on cold mornings after the car has been sitting over night. Goes away when I depress the clutch. Goes away after the engine's warmed up the tranny. Really annoying. I haven't bothered taking it to the dealership because I know what their response will be. Uh, we couldn't replicate the noise... |

| Amateur STI Driver | Giant is right! Now it definitely sounds like the input shaft - try this to prove it. Start the car on a cold morning. When it is making the noise and the transmission is in neutral, lean over and put your ear on the shifter. You are going to use the shift lever as a stethoscope. At the same time, push in very slowly on the clutch and at one point you will hear the input shaft slow down and the noise go away. It is related to the speed of the input shaft and not the pressure on the throw out bearing. By the way, to me this seems to be almost the same frequency chatter you hear when accelerating lightly through first second and third. Maybe syncro noise here also? |

IWSTI Addict since: Feb 2008 Trader Rating: (0) | Whatever it is, it's pissing me off ! My car has 6,500 mile on it and my dealership is replacing all rotors, break calipers and break pads. This maybe a Brembo issue. They tell me my rotors have the wear of a car with 80,000 miles on it....not what I would expect from one of the best automobiles made today |

I don't think this is an 08 only problem people. Mine's been doing this for quite a while now and still @ 30k+ miles. This ad is not endorsed by this member. Please register or login to hide this ad. | |
