IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2006 Trader Rating: (0) | I have a 06 STi and for the past 500 miles or so ive been hearing this clunking noise comming from the right rear of the car. I have 24,000 miles on the car and it happens usally when there is weight back there, even some times when there is no weight. If someone could please help me and tell me how to fix it. | Amateur STI Driver | Sounds like strut clunk. If you can reproduce the sound, bring it to the dealer and they'll replace it. But the problem will come back since most oem struts do this. You can lube it for a temporary solution. Get some lithium grease or marine grease and put it where the strut meets the strut housing. That'll help for a few months. If you want permanent solution, time for coilovers. |

| Junior STI Driver | hope you dont mind if i butt in here...what if you can not reproduce the noise by pushing/ jumping on the rear of the car? I tried and have eliminated the struts as my prob. my noise sounds like drive train...if i am driving at like 30mph, say 4th gear...just cruisin...and i accelerate and then let off, there is a clunk...reproducible everytime!!! |

| Amateur STI Driver | How much are you willing to spend? I hear the Koni's are pretty streetable, check out stretch's thread on the koni's. Also there's a relatively unknown coilover made by Endura-tech. There was a thread not too long ago and they are suppose to ride pretty nice. As long as you have not so stiff spring rates and you can play around with the dampers, the car should feel good if not better than stock. You can also try to find some local guys with different coilover setups and ride in their cars and see how it feels. Just be sure to stay away from stiff japanese coilovers. I think KW's and RCE's are suppose to be not that harsh but probably way more than you need with adjustability and performance. The Blistein's PSS9 are suppose to be DD too. Whiteline discontinued their Group 4 coilovers which is suppose to be a pretty good DD setup. Endura tech goes for 1600's and Blistein's go for 1700. Koni single adjustable with ground control springs are like...1400? I don't know since it's a pretty custom set up. Give them a call. KW and RCE's are around 1900. I can't find that thread or post I remember reading about all the coilovers and which ones are good for DD and track and autox, and I've been searching for the last 10 minutes. But the thing with coilovers is that it probably will make some sort of noise..a clunk or a squeek, thats just what you get with coilovers. So, as long as the clunking you have doesn't diminish your performance or safety, I'd say just go and lube it and see if it goes away. Anyways, you don't know if it's the strut yet so you have to make sure before you spend 2k in coilovers. |

IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2006 Trader Rating: (0) | Thanks a lot guys, I will make sure its the strut before I go spend big bucks on coilovers. I will probably hit it with some grease and I'll see if I can get a ride in a STi with coilovers. If I like them I will probably go with it, I'll update you guys on what I do. Thanks for the info and im going to see if its the struts now. |

| Amateur STI Driver | If you can duplicate the problem, worth bringing it to the dealer if it's under warranty, but thats only if you want to be without your car for a few days. I myself am getting a clunk noise but not sure if it's strut clunk. I am still contemplating if it's worth the trouble to go to the dealership. There are a few options..lube, dealership, new coilovers, live with it, etc. GL with whatever you do. This ad is not endorsed by this member. Please register or login to hide this ad. |
