Default Steering Vibration

Well, I spent another Saturday down at MSR Houston...Practically no one there so I had the whole track to myself, managed to get in around 20+ laps @ 2.3 miles per lap.

I only made one major error during the day which resulted in my spinning off the track and into the mud... (http://www.msrhouston.com/msrhouston...ry.asp?g=track Turn 2A for anyone that cares)

After this, I carried on for a few more laps until I started to notice a very intense vibration from the wheel when I hit around 70MPH+. I can't see any visible damage; don't know why it would be doing this. Car seems to handle the same regardless of the vibration (well, before 70mph at least... I haven't really driven it higher than that after I noticed it)

Any hints on what might be causing the vibration? It's like a cell phone on TURBO-vibrate all throughout the wheel. Thanks.

Sounds like your wheels are out of balance.

That's what another member at the track mentioned, although I wasn't expecting it to happen all at once like that. Thanks for the input.

Off road venture could've knocked off a wheel weight.

if u got aftermarket wheels or even stock wheels with new tires, they might have put sticky weights on them, which i dont like to use on customers cars let alone my car, for the simple fact that they do come off. (being that im on the stock bbs wheels i used wheel weights that i hammered on the lip vs sticky weights) but wheels dont stay balanced forever, i might hit a small bump that could theoretically unbalance your wheel, or a big pothole, a internal band could come loose causing a wheel imbalance, just take to to a tire shop and have them look at them.

I assume you've checked to make sure none of the debris from your off-track excursion is remaining anywhere on the wheels?

Yeah, there was a lot of mud - most of it came off on the way back to the pit and I took off the rest of it by towel, although I haven't washed it properly yet. I'll do that tomorrow and see how it goes. If not, I'll take it into a shop to get the balance checked out. I'm still running stock wheels/tires. Thanks for the replies.

During the winter months here in Buffalo, snow and ice gets on the inside of the wheels, and makes the steering wheel vibrate like crazy. My buddy and I did a rally cross in his WRX. There was alot of dirt, most fell off, but the remaining stuff that we didn't dust off was causing the car to vibrate like crazy. He washed the wheels and all was good. Hopefully that's all it is.

Eh. I'm silly. I didn't even realize the mud could be causing this. Hopefully tomorrow when she's clean all will be well.

Again, thanks for the help guys (& gal )!

Yeah, since it's been raining hard here in Houston the infield of the track was VERY muddy. I didn't mean to go off-roading

That's after wiping it down and before its real wash...
