It should be trivial to tell the difference, and I see no need to examine the top of the wire to be sure. Chips and marks in the paint that occur only along that very narrow area right on the bottom of the wire are not caused by debris thrown up off road -- that would be much more widespread, on all areas of the wire with direct line of sight to the tire.

Here is an off topic question but why do some springs have the rubber coil sleeves (correct term?), where as others do not.

Pic of springs in earlier post see the black rubber sleeves.

Where as the stock sti springs do not.. I just got my new rce springs installed (which are awesome, pics to come soon) and they didn't have them on either...
I had a pair of Tein S springs and they also have the rubber on some of the coils..

Just more of a general question as why some have them and others do not?

thanks,
-Nigel

The rubber sleeve is there to mask the noise that occurs when the "soft" coils fully collapse. In a progressive springs, those coils that are closer together are the "soft" coils and they will reach coil bind very quickly by design. (After this happens, that's when the spring is on it's "firm" coils.)

You'll only find rubber insulators on progressive springs.

The set that I bought for my friend shows signs of bind:

(fronts)

Is this normal?

It's hard to see since it's clear and pretty thin. I'm 99% sure I actually remember seeing them on there though when I installed your springs. Either way, as long as you aren't hearing noises it doesn't really matter.

Dan,

Yeppers I got up in there, they ARE really hard to see :-) But that's actually kinda cool the more I think about it because you see the nice bright yellow springs rather than ugly tan or another color ontop of the springs.

If it would ever stop raining up here in PA I would take some pictures out side and post them! I LOVE THEM. I litterly can't stop smiling when I am driving or taking a turn... it's THAT much fun again to drive the car :-)

Glad you are happy The springs are only part of the equation though, you got yourself a nice collection of parts. The big sways and some neg. camber up front make a world of difference as well, not to mention the ALK.

just so you guys know about the whiteline coilovers, over large bumps when no one was sitting in the rear seats i'm pretty sure i was getting coil bind because i would hear/feel an extremely loud bang. When there were passengers in the back i would hear the same bang going over a lot more bumps. I'm hoping my Ohlins don't do it, but i havn't been able to test them out yet.

I second that!

There's a guy selling a set of whiteline G4's on here who posted some pics and you can see the coil bind on his springs! I was thinking about buying these until I saw the coil bind....

Just to add to this thread, I recently swapped out my V1 RCE Yellows with the replacements sent by RCE and was interested to see the results in what had happened with the setup. I realized that it was a bit of uncomfortable ride but little did I know that somehow my stock bumpstop had actually been ripped... had this happened to anybody else? I took some pictures of this, also discovered that some paint had been taken off of the spring. I'm hoping the new springs will perform better, so far so good as they took bumps a little smoother. I've loved the performance aspect of these springs so hopefully this will do the trick. Sorry for the blurry pictures, didn't feel like grabbing a tripod.
