You know its funny, everyone points to the underside of the springs and says "see! chipped paint! I've got coilbind!" Yet I have yet to hear of one instance where where someone has chipped or damaged paint on the topside of the spring. In order for there to be coilbind, the bottoms of the springs have to come in contact with something. And that would leave witness marks or something on the tops of the springs too.
Now I just woke up so I'm a bit groggy. Perhaps I'll reread this and delete it, but maybe, just maybe, "coilbind" isn't as wide spread as people make it out to be. Maybe the reason that people are seeing all the chipped paint is because it's crappy paint, and as you drive, all the road crap is being thrown up and slowly sandblasting the paint away from the underside of the spring???

I thought I remembered seeing witness marks on top in here, but I don't remember for sure. HOWEVER, in my non-sti related case there were definite witness marks on top of more than 1 coil.

How were the rubber pieces that sit on the top of the front spring between the spring and the perch? There was at least one report of these being damaged (see example below). I checked the dealer yesterday and these are $36 for the pair.

This is because you can't see the topside of the spring until the strut is off the car. The issue IS real and very serious. Take a look at the damage to the suspension parts on Splash's post (image duplicated above). Thanks to RCE and Myles for taking care of thier customers and not trying to explain the issue away as a bad paint job.

I intsalled my Yellows back near thanksgiving. I was running on wet roads all the time, and had a "winter setup" on my car. No aggressive driving, just trips to the snow ect.
Jump to March. I'm going back to my summer setup, and this is where I notice I have NO paint on the underside of my springs. Not just a thin line running on the bottom of the coils but no paint on the entire bottom half of the coils. All the paint is on the top, no binding marks, just a few pits here and there, evenly dispersed on the remaining pint.
Now I guess I could say I had coilbind worse than anyone else on this entire site, because I haven't heard anyone else describe the paint being that bad. But lets see.... no wear on the top. hmmmm. Must be something else.

I'm not saying people haven't had coilbind. But I think there are far more people who are just jumping on the bandwagon.

CGMdan, i think its more a peace of mind kind of thing... and i dont see how you could get that much crap to strip paint off the spring in a thin line like that... its gotta be from contact in some form or another... ill try to get pictures when mine get replaced.

Of course, that would require that the dirt and debris ONLY make chipping patterns in perfect concentric rings that are positioned just at the base of the coil wire...

What are the odds..? <grin>

Or perhaps, you will admit that the ring of wear at the bottom was caused by something rubbing against it, and could potentially also admit that the top of the coil underneath might be the primary suspect...

I'm sure my split spring isolators might also give an indication...

I can confirm that there are no binding issues with the JDM STi pink springs. I have been running these springs for some time now with no issues and definitely no coil bind. FYI.
