The color scheme is NOT indicative of whether the plates are lowering or non-lowering. We sometimes get the plates in black and sometimes in gold, no real meaning behind it. The only way to differentiate between the two is to look at the bottom of the plate. If the pillowball is recessed it's lowering. If the pillowball looks like it's level with the bottom of the plate it's non-lowering. Nan is correct that the body of the non-lowering plate is not quite as tall as well.
