8641 is the pressurized gas twin-tube strut that Koni sells, which this clearly is.

However, here are two pictures of the 8641-1198 Ground Control struts (just the inserts this time), taken from a BMW site. You can see they are 1.5 inches longer that what Ground Control sold me.

Now if we could only find a dyno graph for these inserts, we'd be all set.

Yeah, if I hadn't been in such a rush to get them installed (being on the stock struts/alignment for 7 months will do that) I would have taken them to RRT for a dyno.

Full review coming soonish.

Hate to sound like a noob and keep asking stupid questions, but... let me recap.

1. The GC setup gives 3.0" of bump travel (assuming a 1" lowering I think), which is 2.25" more than stock (0.75"). If we use a camber plate like the PDE that takes away 1/2" (approx) of travel, we are down to 1.75"... which is still more than stock... is this sufficient? Or should we go with a lowering camber plate like the RCE that gives 3/8" more traveland end up with 3.375" of travel? Someone mentioned the tire rubbing the fenderwell trim, but is that person using a stock diameter tire (24.9" dia or smaller)? If that person is using 245/45/17 then it will be taller and rub of course.

Regarding camber required, it seems like anything over 3.0 for street and track sacrifices too much acceleration and braking grip... I would think 2.5 would be around optimum... the question then becomes is it really necessary to use a camber plate to get 3.5 deg and then bring it back with the camber bolt to get slightly better suspension geometry?

Anorexic, those measurements I spoke of where just estimates based on what Mark told me over the phone. I'll take actual measurements when I get these things installed, which'll be soon.

These Koni struts shouldn't clunk like the stockers, right?

Yeah. If you have clunking it's probably related to an install issue. They're not inverted

No, they shouldn't. But, if you go with the GC coilovers, you'll get the typical coilover noises.

I'm about 4 paragraphs into the full review; should be quite the epic when it's finished. Short version: I went with 400f 450r springs. Ride quality on the highway is only slightly harsher than stock WRX struts with Prodrives. There were some noises at first related to the install but now all I get is some minor spring/spring perch noise from the rear on harsh bumps.

I had the fastest street tire time at the autox test n' tune on Sunday, 2nd fastest overall to an FFR Cobra on massive Hoosiers. The shocks soaked up the bumps on the rough lot amazingly well, and the car was very easy to drive. My alignment has a lot to do with that too I suspect, but either way I was amazingly happy. The car has never turned as well as it turns now. (I have the GC camber/caster plates, -3.5 front, -.8 rear; 27mm front bar, 17mm rear bar; caster plates set for max caster)

I have some larger / more competitive autocrosses coming up - Fedex, then the DC ProSolo and then the Northeast Divisional, plus a school this Friday where some national-level guys will get to drive the car. A thorough review is coming, just need time to write it

john

John - that's great news. I can't wait to read your epic review. Being able to compare your set up with "stiff" springs and Stretch's setup with "soft" springs should make for an awesome comparison.

Subscribed!

Well, I've read all through out this thread and wanted to ask "possibly a dumb noobie question", which set up, combo parts from GC would be best for autoX? I just want the best possible combo at a reasonable price range..say 1000 as a max budget.

Thanks.
