Default Talk Me out of Ohlins Fixed perch

I'm on the edge. I'm sick of not being able to hit a preset on my radio. The Booble head must go. Why should I NOT call up RCE today & order a set of fixed pech Ohlins. Is there any proven solution for a better ride on the street that would be a better value? If you guys cannot convince me there is a better way, I will order tonight.

Yes, but coilovers are not for everybody. Unless you track or auto-x your car a fair amount, a lot of people would be happier with fixed perch struts and a progressive spring. To the OP, I'd try to talk you out of it but it's just about the best option there is for a daily driver. If you have the money to spend, go for it. You will not be disappointed.

If you need to have it NOW, Ohlins are your answer. If you would like to try something less expensive first, try Prodrive springs and milder tires (I'm running 235/45 YR17 RE050A's).

If you can wait a bit, there is a Prodrive RB320 suspension in the rumor mill at present -- which includes Bilstein fixed perch struts. I'm waiting for more news on it.

Well, I've ridden in the pinks and ohlins setup. It's nice, but I think the internet has turned it into some magical thing when its still not a Cadillac or anything approaching that. For the price of the fixed perch, you could pick up some German coilovers and have near the same ride quality for less money and have more room to grow.

I'd go with the Ohlins if you don't want potential noises or dealing with ride height setup since RCE pre-sets the adjustments on their coilovers for ride quality. You'd need the alignment either way.

Rebuilds are pretty far down the line for both, struts not needing them for awhile longer than the coilovers.

so...rebuilds, setting ride height, slightly less ride quality, potential noises on an already noisy car are disadvantages to the coilovers.

the advantages are: room to grow if you end up deciding to track the car more, ability to run a higher spring rate for wider tires, setting a higher ride height to clear snow in winter, INOX construction that won't rust away like that Ohlins did in that one pic (I can't buy that being a one-time only occurance), double adjustable valving vs. single adjustable.

If the Ohlins were priced at $1400, they'd be alright. At $2k, they're at the wrong price point considering the double adjustable coilovers out there. I wouldn't be saying this without experience with the Ohlins and Pinks. Its a tremendous improvement over the stock garbage, but its not a magic bullet by any means for someone looking for a softer ride, IMO.

You're absolutely right that the Ohlins do not provide the cadillac ride quality that some people are looking for, but they are outstanding when you get just the right rebound setting for the spring rates you are using. The RCE Tarmac 2's are also a very good option, and with the lower spring rates they would be very well suited to daily driving, but no coilover is quite going to match the ride quality of a good fixed perch setup. Luckily Myles is working on a fixed perch as we speak, so RCE will offer yet another option soon

So it will be a fixed perch solution and not pimped out Variant 1's?

SWEET.

I thought about waiting for the RCE set up but know one can tell me what "soon" means. I'm ready for a change & if "soon" is 8 months down the road then I don't want to wait. Does anyone here know how long "soon" is?

No exact word on how long it will be, but we are going to do our best to get them out as soon as possible

Only reason I could say is wait for RCEs fixed perch. Coilovers are not for me because I'm looking for a better everyday solution. If RCEs are decently priced I'll be pullin the trigger, if not you can't go wrong with Ohlins.
