| The Next Petter Solberg | For a daily driver, a lot of people will recommend the non-JDM coilovers. JDM coilovers usually have crazy high spring rates and are valved primarily for nicer roads than we have =) Look into KW v3s or RCE T2s for the 2k price range, unfortunately neither of these setups come with top hats so you have to add a couple hundred on top of that. There's actually someone selling a set now though, for an 04 STi even! KW Variant 3 Coilovers |

The way I see it.... you can spend around 1k for coilovers based around a crappy damper. OR You can spend around 1k on a strut + spring combo based around a much better damper. The only thing you lose is height adjustability, but you have a much higher quality damper (meaning you have more travel, better ride quality, likely better performance as well, a more reliable longer lasting damper, etc. etc. etc.) Getting a good strut (Koni or Tokico, Ohlins if you have the cash) with a good set of springs (RCE, STi JDM Pinks, Prodrives) will be a better solution. Yes you lose height adjustabilty, but you get MUCH better parts. Plus you can add ground control coilover sleeves if you really want to. Those are my thoughts ![]() Or wait for something from us in that price range. - Andrew | |

IWSTI Addict since: Jul 2004 Trader Rating: (4) | ^^^ i agree. Pick up a set of used wrx struts and throw in some koni inserts and get some new springs and you'll be very happy. |

| Spec C Club | the tein ss coilovers are i think 32 way adjustable and all he had to do was put on the top hats from his factory struts or you could use the group-n and he had someone install it for him and it cost 100 bucks so a total of 1300 installed. i think thats a good deal |

IWSTI Addict since: Jun 2004 Trader Rating: (14) | +1 for Koni inserts and springs. There's no need for coilovers on a strictly street driven car. You will get much better ride quality and performance with Konis and a good spring like RCE or Prodrive than you would with any sub-$1500 coilover. Plus you could do the Konis and springs and still have enough money left in the budget for RCE camber plates up front. The additional camber is a huge handling advantage. In fact, many would argue that alignment and tires are two of the most important variables in suspension setup. |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2005 Trader Rating: (9) | Definately listen to RaceComp and Evil (and myself now). Just as Andrew stated, being your car is an 04, you have many options for your suspension. With that being said, I would like to recommend what RCE recommended to you. Get some used WRX struts (blown or not) buy a set of Koni inserts and get either RCE springs, JDM pinks, or Prodrives. You cannot beat the performance for the $$$. You'll have quality struts that will last you quite some time and will be perfect for daily driving (since you said your car will basically see street use only). You have to keep in mind that while coilovers are nice to have for adjustment, most coilovers ride harsher than any spring/strut combo out there. For daily use, this is likely not wanted. With that being said I've ridden in Koni inserts/Prodrive springs on my Uncles car and can tell you that the ride is superb and the handling is great as well! You won't be disappointed...plus...you'll have the extra dough to spend on making your car faster, handle better, look better, etc. This complete set-up should cost roughly $1300. -WRX Struts -Koni Inserts -Group N hardened Strut tops (optional but highly recommended) -Prodrive Springs, RCE Springs, JDM Pinks (basically your "height" factor for the car is chosen here...If I had to choose I would buy the RCE springs that drop similar to Prodrives) That should be it. Don't forget an alignment! ![]() Kind Regards, Ryan |
