Thats interesting.

We tried installing a set a couple weekends ago, and the Group N rear hat wouldn't sit down all the way on the spring.

I'm assuming you used the supplied upper spring perch and rubber gasket that came with the kit. If you look at the second pic in Thrlskr's thread, the two coilovers on the right are for the rear. The upper perch supplied, along with the rubber peice on top of it, fit snugly into the metal cylinder that is on the bottom of the Group N and stock tophat. I might be able to get a picture of it tomorrow if you are having trouble visualizing how it fits together. The directions supplied by Bilstein did a decent job of showing how everything fit together.

gtsxr:

You mention spring rates for different suspension systems. What range would you consider the ideal spring rate for the PSS9 system for someone like you who intends on using the car as primarily a daily driver with occasional autocrosses and few track days? Would you consider additional GC coilover springs at different rates?

I was initially thinking that 440/380 lb/in could be too much for a daily driver considering the low stock STI rates. My opinion is changing after stretch’s reporting on joust bumpers’ significant effect on spring rate (Thanks stretch!), your review, and others' review of the PSS9.

Thanks.

The rates I was using with the Ground Controls, 325/300, are about as stiff as you can go on the stock struts. I had cut the bump stops when I installed the GCs, but was still riding the bumpstops as I had the car a little too low I think. The main advantage to going with a coilover instead of just springs is the damper, in my opinion. The Bilstein valving is so much better than the stock vavling that it allows you to run higher rates without really sacrificing ride comfort. A lot of this has to do with not being on the bump stops all the time. Although if you were to lower the Bilsteins, or any coilover for that matter, past their recommended range I'm sure you would start seeing some similar traits.

You could get lower spring rates, but I don't know how that would effect the overall travel of the damper. My thinking is the system has a specific amount of bump travel that is designed for a specific spring rate. If you were to put a softer spring rate on the damper, you would get more jounce travel when hitting a road imperfection since there would be less force from the spring to counter act the force of the wheel moving upwards. This means that the static ride height of the car would have to be higher to compensate for the lower spring rate. I don't know if that makes any sense as I've been at work for 14 hours now and I might not be thinking straight.

I should probably do a little more research before asking, but are they height adjustable, and if so is it possible to retain stock or near-stock ride height?

Well, they're coilovers... so they're definitely height adjustable. You should be able to get close to stock ride height. If you can't all you have to do is swap in longer springs.

These are looking better and better to me with every review! I really like that you can use the Group-N tops in the rear without modifying them. Great price too!
