Default Lazarus Ohlins....

... or, Extreme Makeover - Ohlins Edition.

I bought some used Ohlins fixed-perch struts for my '04 STi. They'd been through 1 Ohio winter and looked like this...

Now, these are over a year old, so warranty is out. I do admit that these look bad for only 1 winter, but these are also the only ones I've heard of looking like this. Mechanically, they're perfect.

However, in true Extreme Makeover fashion (without the shoddy workmanship involved in rebuilding a house in 7 days), this is what they look like now...

I may follow these up with assembled pics with their blue booties and yellow RCE springs.... Stay tuned - same bat-time - same bat-channel...

All I can say is, zinc coating ain't worth crap... Though RCE Dan has Ohlins Sportlines on his. Similar winter, similar car. His look fine.

Maybe they're not made of the same metal...

Either way, epoxy primer, 2 coats of something close to WRB, and 2 coats of epoxy clear, ought to armor them effectively enough...

Though I bet I have the only blue set with yellow Ohlins stickers...

Very nice job! Couple questions for you:
  1. How did you remove the rust?
  2. Does the expoxy primer come in a can, or is the industrial stuff for use with a compressor?
  3. Where'd you get the stickers?
  4. There's a smaller white sticker on each strut. What is it?
  5. Did you remove the strut from the strut body, or just tape off the shaft?

Looking good Mike. Like I said before, I've never seen Ohlins rust like that but it worked out in your favor because I like the blue/yellow even better than the original gold.

1 - I sandblasted the exterior
2 - A friend owns a body shop. The primer was mixed, then compressor sprayed
3 - I got the stickers off of Ebay. They're for Ohlins motorcycle forks
4 - The smaller white sticker is my replica of the OE part number sticker, made with a Brady labler and glossy media.
5 - I just taped off the upper seal and shaft

The whole process has 2 coats of epoxy primer, 2 coats of this blue paint he had leftover that comes close to WRB, and 2 coats of epoxy clear.
