Unhappy Swaybars: need help

I picked up whiteline adj f & r bars and put the front on with no problem (dropped the subframe)

The rear bar has got me twisted (it's a 24mm adj for 06 sti, and i have a 07 sti)

the damned thing just doesn't seem to want to fit. when i snake it above the exhaust and get it in position, it looks fine. then i try to secure the brackes to the body mounts and the middle of the bar hits the forward part of the spare tire bulge...

well that's not entirely accurate, what it does hit are these little flanges that protrude out from the spare tire buldge. they look like they are there to mount something to, i just have no idea what. and they're welded, so they don't come off easy

anyways, these are keeping me from getting the bar mounting brackets close enough to the body mounting brackets for a clean mount (in fact, i stripped out one of the body brackets trying to force it on there). even if i had succeded in forcing it on, the bar would be in tense contact with these "flanges".

has anyone had this problem or know about these flanges being an add-on for 07?

any help would be greatly appreciated

anybody? ideas?

so far one guy thought it might be the diffuser mounts, but wouldn't there be plenty of complaints from the 06 STi drivers?

Interesting. I have not heard of any other 07 guys running into this problem. Are you using the factory sway mounts?

I apologize if this doesn't help but it's just an idea. When I installed mine (22mm adj. W/L) I took notice of the clearance issue also. It did not impede the install but neither did it look right. I'm guessing the rear of the car is in the air? Have you tried to install the bar and then lower the car to the ground? When my car rested under it's own weight the bar pulled away from the underbody and what was nearly touching (~1mm clearance) became (~10-12mm clearance). Just a thought.

Cheers

yes, i'm using factory mounts.

whiteline swaybar part no# BSF36XZ

schell: thanks for your input, yes the car was lifted on jackstands, but i did not have the endlinks attached. I was just trying to get the swaybar brackets onto the swaybar mounts. i was under the assumption that the SB mounts and the buldge were part of the same piece of steel, and would not really make a difference whether it was lifted or not. i was going to lower it to connect the spherical endlinks i got for it.

do you think there's that much chasis flex going on?

if no one has a different theory, i'll try just snaking the bar through the muffler and then lowering to actually mount it i guess?

You're supposed to have the suspension loaded when you install sways. Get a set of ramps and back the car onto them, and what Schell said will probably come into play.

I didn't have the suspension loaded but there was enough clearance to do the install in the air (possible due to the smaller bar). I can't explain the mechanism for this, but it does make a significant difference. Also not sure what you're following as far as install instructions but use teflon tape instead of grease on your bars, it will prevent you from having to re-grease the bushings every few months.

i was following the whiteline instructions... i've seen techs install them on lifts before(2005 and earlier) and then finish the endlinks loaded (which is how i did the FSB), maybe the "spare bulge" changed a little since then (for the diffuser)?
i dunno, but i'm gonna go get some ramps and see if i can get this settled.

thanks for all the help guys, i'll definitely let ya know by this weekend if it goes on or not

yeah, there's a negative amount of clearance at those two points in the photo.

Before you swap the bar can you take some pics of how much clearance you have with the stock bar in place?

Also, if you have a hard time snaking the bar over the muffler you can undo the two rearmost hangers for the can, and pass it over that way.
