Default Dreaded clunk is back..

Third time's a charm.. replacing the mounts soon at ATX (stock mounts).
Went to the dealer to get it checked and the service manager said get the suspension back to stock to get it warrantied. FK that !!.. all i have is sways n endlinks.

ANYHOW, IF the strut mounts DONT fix the issue, then it HAS to be the struts themselves...

In that case I WILL need to goto a dealer to replace them. Anyone know of a GOOD suby dealer (service dept) in NYC/NJ that will replace the struts even if i have cusco sways and kb endlinks ??

Tell your dealer to f himself. He can not deny you warranty work only SOA can. Tell him that you want to hear the SOA rep tell you that you have to take your sways and endlinks off.

Yep
That's the stealership hoping you will just pay them to fix the problem. Your sways and endlinks should have nothing to do with the warrany on your struts.

If you ask me, I think the dealer was being nice by saying take the sways off before they do warranty work. If anything he is covering his a$$ because if his manager comes in and says "why the hell are you doing this under warranty when this kid has sways". Plus since sways are linked to the suspension it would be easy for soa to say it caused the problem because they add stress to the struts. I know that, that's total bs, im just playing devils advocate. When I had my civic (long story short) leased, out of warranty, over heating, and in the shop every week. Honda of america in cali called me, (I had a case with them) and they said they woudn't even offer to help out with the repair costs because I did my own work on my car like changing spark plugs, quote "you changed your spark plugs, installed a stereo, have an exhaust. you obviously have a knowledge of cars, and who knows what else you have done to the car, therefore we can not assist in the costs of the repairs"

Thats when I called the suby dealer up, and ditched the civic for an 06 wrx

99% of the time it is the struts. By design they are noisy. Such as life. The clunk DOES NOT mean they are blown, borked, ruined, etc. Replacing them will work for a little bit but the clunk will return. Again it is the design of the strut that causes the clunk.

It was my understanding that they start to clunk because they are cracked and/or broken. Is this not the case?

I have an appointment with my dealer on 1/8 to get mine looked at. I started a case with Subaru for this since my warranty was up on 12/5.

If this is really no big deal, I may just let it go instead of fighting with the dealer and Subaru.

That is not true. Clunking does not mean the struts are broken/blown/worn out and so on. There are a few cases where the strut was actually borked but those cases are very rare.

Subaru typically replaces them under warranty without question and the new struts will be quiet for some time. However, the clunk will return. Like I stated above, the clunk is a side effect of the design of the strut.

As long as the struts are still working, just lube them and forget about it. I lube mine every couple of months.

Dreaded clunk is back.. ???
When does the "clunk happen? I have a Clunk at start up. I always thought that I had bad motor mounts. When I turn the engine over I only hear the motor turning over..Wump wump wump fire. Only when the motor fires (starts) is when my "clunk occurs"..
Not trying to hi-jack. However this thread did get my attention..

Where are you hearing this clunk, front, rear, right, left, etc?

It sounds like the driver side front. It even louder when sitting in the car.. Rather then haven someone else start it for me, while I would be outside waiting for the "clunk". The motor does seem to move around a bit to when turning the engine off. I just always thought it had to do with my motor mounts...

What year car do you have?

If it is brand new I would hie thee to the dealer and have it checked out.

If it is a 2006 I would also hie thee to the dealer and have them check for liquid-filled motor mounts; if it has them, get them replaced. There's a TSB so they should do it under warranty.

And yes this is a complete thread hijack! If you want to continue the discussion it would be best to start a new thread in Engine, Power and Performance or the warranty forum.

I've snapped motor mounts before and if you snapped yours you would know it. The engine will jump around in the engine bay slamming it self against the broken mounts/frame.

Please be a little more descriptive in the sound...it could be a different cause than the struts.
