Ok, so I went to the dealer to fix my clunk...apparently I had an issue with the strut mount. If you look in the stock strut mount there is a rubber peice within the exterior strut mount rubber housing. The internal rubber peice usually fits plush around a metal bracket...there is a pink painted link to ensure that the interior rubber peice is in the right place....mine was twisted and the interior rubber piece had bulged against the metal bracket...nonetheless, the solution was to remove the defective strut mount and put on a new one under warranty...problem solved!!! until it happens again :-)

I assume if out of your warranty Subaru will not replace this...Though I thought I read here before that a few people have had their struts replaced even after their warranty...anyone else ever here of this happening?

if i were to get a 15k mile checkup sumwhere besides the dealership, does the warrantly still cover the clunking noise? i'm getting that noise too.. i thought it was the water in the intercooler spray moving around but its worse now

I swear I have this problem on my 07 I just picked up. I have 250 Miles on it and I am hearing a clunk from the rear passenger side when I come to a stop. It sounds like a big 2 liter bottle of soda or something is rolling around in the trunk. I checked the spare to see if it was loose/ I grabbed the car by the tow hook and shook it and I can only duplicate if I come to a stop.
I also have the sound of the rear glass creaking. I thought it might be the glass settling becuase the car is new.

Its not just the strut design, the rear struts are on an odd angle. This coupled with what I am assuming is poor seal design is what leads to clunk and ultimately failure.

I have had and fixed two clunks. The first was the struts, started at 26k very faint. Both rears. Replaced by dealer under warranty at 30k miles. The valving inside comes apart and clunks when the strut extends. The new ones are a new part number but are going to do the same thing according to the parts dept. The second was my aftermarket sway bar endlinks. The spherical bearing were shot and had just enough play to produce almost the exact same noise as the struts. Replaced with stock endlinks clunk gone.

P.S. im now clunk free

you guys are kidding, right? i must have gone through 6 sets of rear struts already since i bought the car in october 2004. my first clunk occured about 1-2 months after i bought the car.
lubing it is temporary solution, as the struts by design are made to lose the lubrication over time.
subaru needs to do a better job on vendor/product selection process (i.e. bilstein struts for 05 models).

p.s. i just got another pair of rear struts replaced by subaru.

lol its funny you say this...i took my car in on tues. to get my clunking fixed....i told him my educated guess what the problem was but i guess he didnt want it..he said it would take 3 to 4 hours to get the problem diagnosed.. ..all you have to do is start the car and go and you hear the clunk.....

I had a similar issue with my car and it turned out to be my axle nuts. They torqued them down and clunk is gone. Worked for me!
