I have the same squeaking. it sounds like my back glass or wing.
Yeah, I'm thinking that it might be the trunk or wing. You can only hear it when u go on pretty big bumps when the rear really takes some use. For example, if I go on a really old beat up road, I can hear it pretty good. If I'm driving in a messed up freeway, I can hear it as well. The problem is that the dealer seems not to hear it at all I wonder what it is.

I hear clunks sometimes but honestly I thought alot of this could be fixed by the TiC klunk killer bushings
Are you sure that you're talking about the same clunk? I mean, I definately hear another clunk when I come to a full stock, but this clunk doesn't come from the struts. The clunk from the struts is heard only when you're going over bumps at a low speed and they will be heard along with the suspension traver up/down motion.

TWO DIFF CLUNKS.

CLUNK ONE: WHILE PULLING INTO A DRIVEWAY AT VERY SLOW SPEEDS. 'CLUNK'. THIS IS FIXED WITH THE AFTERMARKET UPGRADE.

CLUNK TWO: CONSTANT CLUNKING AT SLOW SPEEDS OR ON BAD ROADS. THIS IS FIXED WITH A REPLACEMENT OEM STRUT.

In my troubleshooting, i drove in circles in a supermarket parking lot (both directions). i hear major clunking while in my right turn. that tells me that i need the strut - and the dealership agreed.

i just dropped off the car and as i was pulling up the road...i hear the LR strut making noise. JOY.

To the OP. Do not let them beat around the bush. Your shock is bad. I had a war with my local Subaru dealer about this issue. I finally printed out that long-ass thread, and brought it to their attention that I am part of a nation-wide online Subaru STi enthusiast community, of which more than enough people are experiencing this.

First they told me it was not reproducable.

Next they told me it was a bad mount, so they changed it.

Third time was the charm when I showed up with that thread printed out, and demanded they change the strut.

Also, unless you have a friendly relationship with that service manager for a while, do not trust anything he says. The same person who's giving you your tips on launching will be the one who denies your broken axle warranty because "you were racing it at a track". He won't be lying because he has now seen you do it first-hand.

Just lube the offending strut shaft and see if it goes away.

My passenger rear strut on my 04 started clunking on low speed bumps. It probably clunked all the time, but I couldn't hear it once I picked up speed.

Lubed it for 2 months then just bit the bullet and installed Ohlins Fixed Perches.

IMO it's not worth getting OEM replacements under warranty, because they'll clunk again. Count on it happening.

This is the current clunk that I'm hearing right now. This is not the strut clunk.

Aftermarket upgrade? Should this clunk be present in the first place? I know that there are bushings that "eliminate" this clunk but they also state that it puts more stress on the rear end. Damm clunks, squiks, rattles....

Yeah, definately be careful with the dealerships. The damm dealership where I bought the car didn't even want to look at the car because they said that the aftermarket exhaust was doing the clunk. I had to go all the way to Temecula 3 times to have the strut replaced.

Let me know what they say. Guess what, I just starting hearing the damm strut clunk again, but now it's the other one, rear-left

The OEM struts are junk. Subaru needs to find a solution to this widely documented problem. Replacement of the struts with OEM parts of a similar design is not the answer.

Lube the shafts...it's a temporary fix.

Does anyone know of any aftermaket struts that would get rid of this stut clunk?
Ive got an 04 wit only 22k and ive been through all the B.S. wit the dealership and wound up getting no strut because my warranty supposable was over 2 days before the scheduled repair even though it was diagnosed while under warranty...... long story!... Also have the tic klunk kit, nothing against that company their GREAT, but the kit did nothing for the problem. Iam at the point of just going wit all new coilover setup to get rid of this clunk.

I've got Ohlins fixed perches. Good stuff.

would it be a bad idea to just change the rear suspension to ohlins and leave the fronts?

Talk to Myles about mismatched struts. The damping curves would be different between the front and rear and may make a funny riding car.

Also, front struts are also known to clunk.

Actually, the shocks are made by KYB, not subaru, so who should be the ones to blame?

I suffered long enough with that god forsaken clunk that i will never buy a KYB product of any kind again in my lifetime.
