| Amateur STI Driver | In case anyone out there is wondering, I have gone wingless and back to winged recently and I can tell a huge difference in the cars handling. When I got the car last November, within the first 2 weeks I removed the wing. I bought a new trunk and had it painted so I could have a wingless trunk for daily driving and a winged trunk for the track. Well, I finally got my new lid back from the paint shop the other day (they had a hell of a time matching the paint) and just to try it out, I stuck the winged trunk back on. Keep in mind I have been driving around without a wing for approx. 4 months now. On my way to work I take a twisty road to have some fun. There is one turn in particular that at around 55mph I can feel the rear start to swing out. With the wing on, I didn't feel the rear letting go at all. So I hit the turn 4 times, each time going a little faster. At 75mph it still felt completely stable. I didn't want to go much faster because there are homes on the road and its a blind corner. I took the car on the highway too and got up to, well, fast and I could tell it was a hell of a lot more stable. When I first removed the wing I thought there was no difference because it felt good in the corners and on the highway, it really didn't feel any different to me. Now that I put it back on...I can easily say there is a huge difference in the way the car handles. Night and day. However, I am still going to use the wingless trunk for daily driving. If I ever want the winged trunk, I can just throw it on...only takes 5 minutes. Just wanted to let everyone know my experience Wing vs. Wingless. Hope this helps anyone who is trying to make the decision to go winged or wingless. This ad is not endorsed by this member. Please register or login to hide this ad. |

| Amateur STI Driver | BTW: Trunk lid, torsion bars, latch system, and key cylinder are a little under $400 bucks total. The paint job was quoted at $275 but only ran me $200. Total for a wingless lid.. roughly $600. When you order the trunk lid, make sure you get the key cylinder bracket as well. I didn't know I needed it until I put my new trunk lid together. So now I have to order the cylinder bracket. The latch system is very easy to put together. Just take a look at the one on the car. It only takes a minute to piece together. You will also need a 3rd brake light for the rear deck. I sold my 02 WRX to a friend who didn't need it (has a spoiler with one in it) so we just swapped rear decks. There is already a hook up in the trunk for the 3rd brake light from the rear deck (blue clip in the center of the underside deck). |
