Default 3rd set of rear sturts - record?

Ok - I had two sets of rear struts replaced on my 04' under warranty. I am going in today to have my 06 replaced. This has to be some sort of record. Fix the damn struts by 08 Subaru.

I thought they had them fixed for 06. I already had one set replaced on my 05 and it's sounding like the 2nd set is starting to go bad.

If it's the "clunking" your talking about then they are not going bad. They are just noisy. Part of that is by design (inverted strut). Put some grease on the shaft to help reduce the noise.

I guess grease is a good workaround, but if it's 'by design', it seems like it should be clunky all the time rather than eventually getting noisier as time goes on. When I had them replaced the first time, they were leaking oil - they were definitely bad. No oil yet...

Good for you...they will clunk again.

That is my point. New or not they will clunk given time. The struts are actually pretty damn good. However, the design isn't the best (probably cost effective though). IIRC correctly is has something to do with the strut insert being over-extended while at rest and then re-inserting itself into the strut body when in motion. That is the "clunk" noise. Over time the grease wears thin and the clunk is louder.

If I had to guess I'd say that Subaru will go to Bilstein for '08 to better compete with the Evo.

That's very interesting. It does seem that repeated hard launching wears on them quicker though.

I just grease them every month when I switch my track tires on. Just a little on the shaft and you're good to go. This past weekend, I used marine grease which is water proof.

For a more permanent solution, just get Ohlins. That's what I did. They should be on my car by next weekend.
