I am curious how the STi's handling might be positively affected if the following upgrade path was taken:

Whiteline Steering Rack Bushings
TRU STi Style V-Limited Lip Spoiler
Lightweight JDM bumper beam (shaves 15+ lbs of weight off the nose)
Braille Lightweight Battery(shaves 20+ lbs of weight off the nose)
Perrin lightweight crank pulley(shaves 4+ lbs of weight off the nose)

Now 40+ lbs is a significant weight savings. In conjunction, these modifications would remove weight from the front end, significantly reduce understeer, and increase downforce, resulting in a substantial improvement in handling before one even considers the variety of suspensions upgrades from sti:

STi Racing Suspension
STi Sport Suspension
STi Pink Springs OR STi Coilovers
Upgraded Trailing Lings
STi Group N Strut Top Mounts

Any thoughts? Should we put some pacakges together for everybody?

Kevin,
Package seems to be right on target and should make a substantial difference in handling. Has anyone tried all of the components listed?

Wanna sponsor me? Just kidding.

So, I thought buying the whiteline steering bushings would of been an upgrade for my 05? But the 05's dont need it? I am confused.

Kev,

might I might want a set of the JDM fogs. I remember a post where you had a package for these paired with the STi light weight bumper beam. This ring a bell?

somebody get back to us about who these bushes work for the '05 STi.

Yes, we seem to be special ordering these at least twice a week these days. Sometimes the painted surrounds are backordered. But currently I am told all the colors are available in our warehouse in Japan.

You can place your order here:
http://www.kingofimports.com/product...0&idproduct=12

We are maintaining the JDM STI fog package plus (with clear lights) price of $629 shipped to your door even though the dollar has weakened by about 10%.

If you have any questions, let us know.

hi. i just did the install tonight; got 'em from KOI. it took about 90 minutes (part of the time was teaching my 7.5 year old daughter about ratchets, sockets, eye protection, etc. ) it's not difficult, but things are very tight. here's the step-by-step i used. ymmv.

tools: 12mm socket, 14mm socket, 12mm wrench, 12" ratchet extension, ratchet/breaker/impact wrench, pliers, worklight, straight-slot screwdriver, torque wrench.
  • chock the rearwheels; jack up the front and put on stands.
  • remove undertray
  • remove front stabilizer (this is the structure with the main front jack point and two arms connecting to lower frame points.)
  • remove the bolts holding the two steering rack brackets
  • passenger side: slide the bracket inboard, remove the old bushing and easily install the new. don't bolt up this bracket as yet.
  • driver's side: the hydraulic lines/hoses on the driver's side of the rack are too tight around that bracket. perhaps you could push/pull 'em; i definitely wouldn't.
  • instead, i disconnected the upper u-joint from the steering shaft. if you look above the driver's side of the rack up near the firewall, you'll see the splined steering column shaft sticking through the firewall. first turn the wheel so the bolt on the u-joint is accessible. remove the bolt (12mm); the u-joint should easily slide off the steering shaft.
  • you'll now be able to drop/pull down the rack enough to wiggle the bracket out. (don't get crazy with it since the rack is still attached to the steering pump.) remove the bracket (i used a pliers to rip off the bushing "nipple" sticking through this bracket), replace the bushing, and reinstall the bracket (but don't bolt it up yet).
  • reconnect the upper u-joint to the steering shaft; you'll need to push up on the rack a bit. note: make sure you don't turn the steering shaft or u-joint/rack otherwise you'll misalign your steering wheel; e.g. the wheel will be ****ed to one side while you're driving straight.
  • bolt up the driver's side rack bracket first (this will locate the rack laterally), then the passenger side, reinstall the front stabilizer and undertray. you're done.
  • enjoy more accurate steering.
