Default forester 4130 subframe *updated pics of sti subframe

thought i'd share the subframe i just did for a friend on mine. i took the things i learned from doing my first subframe and applied them to this one, which im going to scratch mine and redo. i also have a couple things that i didnt do to this one that i will do to my new one. i still need to go to the laser cutter and weld on that tab to incorporate the mount by the a-arm. but the car feels responsive and the steering is very direct. so heres the pics. im also going to scratch that middle section, huge pita that i kinda gave up on getting perfect, but everything mounts up correctly even though 2 of the joints arent perfectly inline.

i hated doing that middle section it took forever to cut and notch and even longer to weld. but, i think we are just going to do 2 straight bars coming down with gussets at each 90 degree joint, that way you can bolt on the factory jacking point.

Tonight jason came over and we added one more bar and installed the piece on his forester. i think it came out great, if i can get the tabs cut by early next week its going to get powder coated.

heres pics from tonight. one of the pics is the final piece but still missing the bracket at the bottom. Another pic is my lame attempt at paint shop to show what the final one should look like. red being tubing, and the teal color being gussets. and last but not least the piece mounted on jasons car with the factory jacking plate in place.

i think i've figured out how im going to do the center section on my future subframes that will be a mounting point to add rigidity and stiffness and be useful as a jacking plate. basically instead of doing the cross section or 2 straight tube sections in the center. im thinking of using a sheet of 4130 about 6"x12" that has dimple dies. like the picture below to give you an idea of what dimple die sheet looks like. i use to use dimple dies on my jeep/buggy to shave weight and increase the strength on thin sheet. so i thought this would be the perfect application for it. to use as a mounting point and as the jacking plate.

Nice looking piece! You know you could sell a dozen or so of these without even breaking a sweat, don't you?

thats eventually my plan. but until i get a vendor account i dont think i can publicly talk about it on here. I'd probably be doing that right now, but its really hard when i dont have much capital to buy all the materials, and pay for the brackets i want made, etc... But I'm about a week away from hopefully having what the final subframe should look like, just waiting on the laser cutter for brackets and UPS to bring me dimple dies. Then I'll work on the aluminum splash/diffuser for the bottom.

thanks for the comments. I've almost given up on this considering all the money i spent so far, and the pennies i have in the bank. but i think i see a light in the end of the tunnel.

heres what i managed to get done today. thought i was going to finish and be able to get to ups but, between the puppy and eating and hanging out i didnt finish. just need to do the center part. i may ditch the plate with dimpe dies idea, and just do 2 pieces of tube section connecting the 2 with some gussets possibly. i think i may be way overdoing, engineering it. so heres some pics one trying to show the whole subframe and the other to show clearance. the downpipe is still the lowest point. and the piece by the oil pan drops just below it, so it doesnt hang down like i believe the do-luck piece does.
