I know you said you checked your endlinks. I had a similar problem and my endlinks were tight but not tight enough and when I hit a bump with the one wheel or turned it clunked. They didn't have play in them using my hand but must have been enought witth the force of the car to make noise. I snugged the endlinks a tab more and it was fine.

I would also recommend tightening your Swaybar Endlinks. I just went through the same thing.

Where can I buy the stock nuts for the endlinks? I would like to replace them with new ones...

Does anyone have a part number (Canada)... would the dealer have them?

I'm going to assume that it's not the endlink nuts because they almost look like they are welded on after this winter... I put a rench to them other other day and they didn't budge....

Any other ideas? I still can't believe that it could be my BJ's as my car has less than 22,000 miles....

Thanks,

Jay

I'm going to the track in a couple weeks so I would like to get to the bottom of this clunk/tap before then....

Would rather not have something rip off the car going around a corner at 80mph!

OK After driving the car a bit more, I can almost always replicate the problem/clunk/pop.

If I'm stopped at a light and start to roll backwards then hit the brakes, it clunks.
I can then more forward a bit... stop, start to roll back, hit the brakes... clunk!

Feels like it's coming from right under the drivers or in front of the pedals.

Anyone have any ideas?

Really Appreciate the help!

Thanks,

Jay

Is your swaybar or endlinks hitting the tie rods?

I don't think so... they haven't made this noise since installing them the first time about a year ago... So I can't see them start to clunk due to hitting the tie rods now...

I checked the endlink nuts and they are all tighter than a nuns twat

Some people mentioned Ball Joints may be bad but I can't see that since my car only has 21,500 miles on her...

If it really is the endlink nuts, can I get new ones from the dealer?

Axle nuts? Mine clunks when I transition from moving forward to backward, backward to forward, or sometimes when I apply brake pressure. Over time, STis seem to work the axle nuts just the smallest bit loose and the transitional movement makes them clunk. I am going to replace mine next time I do a tire rotation and make sure they are torqued to spec - cheap fix. Duno if that is your problem but it sounds like it could be the issue. *shrug*

I'll check the Axel nuts tonight and see if the sound goes away!

Based on this thread I think I may have the same problem!

Popping in driveline(?) when letting off gas

could this possibly strut clunk coming from the front? I just did my sway and I'm getting the same thing and I was just wondering if it could possibly be coming from the strut.

OK, Still haven't figured it out but I can replicate the sound/clunk almost every time now.

It does it in many different situations, but it's usually when the car is NOT in gear (or at least I can't hear/feel it).

I can make it happen every time if I let the car slowly move backwards and then touch the breaks.

As soon as hit the brakes, I can hear a clunk/tap sound and feel it though the pedels.

I can sit in my driveway and make the sound every time. Drive forward, stop, slowly start to drift backwards, tap the breaks, CLUNK!

The dealer thought it was the top of the spring that was possibly hitting the sides of the cup it sits in because some of the rubber sleave is kind of pushed up and not fully wraping around the spring... I really can't see that happening or enough to make the sound...

It's not the following:

Endlinks
Endlink brackets
Axel nut

I know one person said it could be the ball joint, but my car has under 22,000 miles so I can't really see it being that?

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jay

The tech at the subaru dealership actually put his head down beside the wheel well while I went back and forth making it clunk/tap. He said the sound was coming from the top of the wheel well area and that's why he figured it was the spring hitting a piece of metal...

He didn't go to the other side of the car to see if the sound was just as loud, but I'm pretty sure it's coming from the divers side somewhere...

However, sometimes it feels like the sound is coming from the center of the car....

Is it possible it's your brake pads sliding around a bit?

Ding! Give the man a cigar!

Most cars have one piston for the brakes. In order to apply even force to both sides of the disc, the caliper slides on pins so that it can grip both sides. Our calipers have pistons on both sides of the disc. Because of this, the calipers are fixed and there is no active force keeping the pads against the rotor face. When you change direction, the pads can shift in the caliper. This makes a clunking sound as they settle into the new position for the current wheel rotation. The clunking shouldn't happen again if you touch the brakes again after continuing in the same direction; only after *changing* direction.

There should be threads on "Brake Clunk" and you can also look into "Pad Knockback"

The only other clunk source that occurs only when changing direction is loose axle nuts. But I'd bet on brake clunk first.
