Shops should have the M1 grease. Anything odd will have to be ordered.

I'm say disassembled with springs and perches removed.

To do a proper greasing you're going to have to take them completely apart.

I've had good results with Tri-flow every 3 months instead of lithium grease.

Yeah once you unscrew the bottom bolt that baby should just slide right out. So in one hand you'll have the shaft (silver cylinder w/ bumpstop on the bottom) and in the other hand you'll have the rest (perch, bracket to bolt onto the knuckle etc.). Then grease it good.

M1 synth, HP800, GOOD wheel bearing grease, just about anything but white lithium grease.

Alright, so i picked up the grease. I am trying to figure out where to apply the grease, and where i possibly apply the white litium grease. I included a pic from the prodrive bumpstop replacement tutorial, and i was just confused.

--- should i be using white litium grease somewhere? if so, which number?

--- When packing the grease inside the actual housing, do i just throw it into #2 and go from there? How much quantity am i putting in there?

--- Also, how do i clean out the housing?

Everywhere you see grease inside - clean it.

Pack a bunch into the ridges on the seals.

Give the bottom of the insert (the thicker portion) a good coating where it goes into the housing.

Also look inside the housing as you'll see some polished marks from the lack of lube. put grease on those surfaces.

Put it back together.

DO NOT do this in your living room if you have a wife, girlfriend or any other significant other you live with.

Horray! i was hoping you were stll up, so if i am reading this correctly, put tons of grease into #1 and #2? can i put too much grease in there? what is the best way to clean out the factory grease? just stick a cloth in there?

We typically just use a rag and our fingers to get in there and clean it out. Get as much as you can.

Good call Tony !!

To the OP....after you do this...please update this thread since you are one of the first to actually do this in such a systematic way as instructed. We do it all the time and can get rid of about 95% of a clunking rear set of struts.

Update at first then every 5k or less. I feel and think the more you pack inside there the better chances of the clunk staying away for longer( imo).

This would help at ton probably but if you don't get one just try putting the strut upside down so the bottom bolt is up on like a rug or carpet and push it down. That bottom bolt isn't torqued that hard so if you can keep it on the ground, the carpet should help it stay put and not rotate.

I've seen this done before....

Impact gun works wonders if you have one.
