Default power steering fluid service?

I have a high mileage WRX and I was wondering if I need to ever flush the power steering system? Is this something that needs to be changed over time and miles? thanks for any help guys and gals!

I changed out all my fluids at 2.5 years/
It is easy to do- just jack up the car, suck out what you can with a turkey baster, then disconnect the lower hose and crank the steering wheel lock to lock. reattach the hose and refill the canister with a good synthetic dexron III + fluid. Turn the wheel lock to lock and top it off.
Edit: I should not have to say it, but place a container to catch what comes out of your lower hose.

I was told by the dealership that the power steering never needs to be serviced. Only filled as needed.

When installing my Q-Rack i noticed that I had beaten up my power steering fluid. It starts red, once you boil it, it gets dirty looking.

IIRC, it should be changed every 40k... Mine was really dark at 45k. The fluid costs all of $3 a quart, and all you need is a quart. If you don't have a flare wrench, there's another $5. For $8, why not swap it out?

FWIW- if you decide to go synthetic, be warned that your steering will be MUCH easier. Some like this, some don't. With my 11.5:1 rack, I could not go synthetic since it would be too hard to control the car with the small amount of force needed to turn the wheel. The synthetic really makes a big difference.

Dobie said it well on how to swap it, but I would suggest turning lock to lock very slowly. As in 30 sec lock to lock the first time or two, always making sure not to drain the reservoir.
