Default Can't get rid of clunking, help!

Hey everyone, my 05 sti currently has 37k on it, and has the notorious clunk sound coming from the rear end in first and second gear. I recently took it into the dealership and they replaced one of the rear struts for me stating that this should solve the problem. About a month later the sound came back, and they said that they couldn't do anything else for me, thus voiding my warrenty. My suspension set up is pink springs, and front/rear sway bars. At this moment I do not know how to go about solving this clunking issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you're gonna stick with stock shocks, the best you can do is jack it up every month or so, and spray some lithium grease under the dust boot.

Works for me every time.

it could also be the rear deck panel... im pretty sure thats where my "clunk" is coming from... i thought it was my OE struts... so i bought ohlins... and they instantly did the same thing... its something else in the car.

+1 to that. Stock struts = clunk. no way around it. a little lithium grease will ease the pain for a little while ( I took mine off and repacked them with grease and it lasted about 10,000 miles before they clunked again!)

Time to search the aftermarket!

I thought I had strut clunk. It wasn't. There are a LOT of things that have caused noise for me back there, but the most obnoxious one (that I thought was a strut) was a rattling window.

Thanks for the inmput guys. I am primarily concerned now because I am considering selling her off, so it is time to buckle down and solve this problem.

I was in the same boat as you. I didnt enjoy the car because of the clunk, I couldnt take it anymore. I was greasing and regreasing on every oil change and getting pretty tired of that.

Do yourself a favor and buy some BC Racing Coilovers from Import Image and be done with it. They are just south of a grand. This is far less than getting yourself into another car.

If you are referring to the BC's as "cheap," well they may be inexpensive compared to other brands and may not perform as well as coilovers that sell for 2K plus, but they are not "cheap."

The title of the thread: "Can't get rid of the clunking, help!"

The BC's are a worthy soultion to his problem.

+1.

If they were junk, they'd be off my car. Period.
