Default Toyota/Subaru “Love Child” Possibly Conceived in 2011

Possible 2011 Subaru Coupe?

An on again, off again, collaboration between Toyota and Subaru appears to be back on if the latest indications from Japan are to be believed. According to several sources, including Toyota executives, an affordable rear-wheel drive Celica-style coupe could be produced as soon as next year, but at the very least by 2011.

The underpinnings of both the Toyota and Subaru-badged vehicles will be a rear-wheel drive revised version of the naturally aspirated boxer 2.0-liter unit generating around 220 horsepower mated to a six-speed manual gearbox from the current Impreza WRX STI. It is hard to imagine, however, that Subaru would not at least offer an all-wheel variant for their traditional followers. Toyota’s contribution will be mostly production and quality control measures. If it comes to fruition the Toyota model, will be sold exclusively in Japan, while the Subaru-badged model will be marketed worldwide. The mechanical package will be identical, but both Toyota and Subaru will create exterior designs to differentiate their cars from each other. Expected to ride on a 103-inch wheelbase, the 2,866-pound coupes will use a 2+2 seating configuration and priced to start around $20,000.

This partnership is particularly important for Toyota which has been without a U.S. market sports car since the MR2, Celica and Supra all were discontinued in the last decade.

Isn't 220 a little high for the current NA boxer 4? I hope they misunderstood, and were referring to the WRX boxer 4. If it came with the WRX engine, and looked like that, I'd get one. Hell, I might get 2...

For 20K, I wouldn't hold my breath... but it would be interesting to see what trims are going to be available, and at what pricing. There are rumors that the Subaru version will have an AWD option...

That is HAWT!

I want it! RWD and wrx engine w/ 6 speed.

This might actually sway me from wanting a Genesis coupe!

Come on Subaru, bring this to the U.S. with non-exploding 2.5T engine, AWD and decent brakes. We want another 22b. Look at the car I drive, its an AWD Coupe, and they are selling well even in a down market. Make one Subaru, not everyone wants to spend $50k on an AWD sports coupe.
