I wouldn't say there are tons of light (well under 3000 lb) RWD coupes out there. 1 & 3 series BMW and the Genesis coupe are close to 3500 lb each. Not counting convertibles, what else is available, especially at $20-25k?

because it is. There are NO official designs out yet. EVERY pic is pure speculation.

My hope is that it is the former, and that what we're really seeing is the return of Subaru (and Toyota?) to WRC, this time with a world beater.
Subies are nose-heavy now.

Why would you want to ruin this car with AWD? SO it can have 60% of the weight in the front? NOT Subaru FWAWD

RWD OR DIE!
FWAWD? Subaru AWD systems are 50/50 at their most front-biased; the STI is 35F/65R or 41F/59R at rest and many of the automatic transmissions are a 35F/65R split. I don't see where you think Subaru's torque split is front-biased. As for weight balance, you're going to see a front bias unless they run a hood like a Z4, which isn't likely. Even the original AE86 was 53% front biased. You're right that an AWD configuration would mean more nose-weight, but I think the impreza does pretty damn well despite that fact.

It will be very unlikely that this car, if it is RWD, will be sold as a Subaru. Subaru has already stated that they don't want it under their name because it might dilute their image which is based on AWD cars. Frankly, if this car is made to the proposed specs, I don't care if it's called a Subaru, Toyota, or Scion. The guts look like they'll be largely Subaru which is good enough for me.

Edited to keep the best part. I agree completely, and coupled with the fact that they have a giant like Toyota possibly adding in their Direct Injection technology to a Subaru turbo motor, and it sounds like a winner to me. Only thing that could kill the car would be the weight. If it weighs >3000lb, fuhgeddaboudit.

I thought the whole point of a Boxer engine was to increase the AWD performance.... so why combine it with RWD?

Never heard that it was specifically designed to increase awd performance, I dont doubt that the statement is true but it seems to do just find in porche's gt2/gt3's with rwd so I dont see how combining it with rwd would be a bad thing?

i dont know if this is stated before or not but IMO to capture both market toyota should make the RWD version and subaru should make the AWD, that way you get an option. im sure both would sell a good amount.

if they add AWD, the weight is going to go up. they probably don't want that. they have a car for that market already and it's the sti.

my guess is it's going to compete with the hyundai genesis category from the sounds of it. both companies offer nothing around that area (2 door sports coupe with real power, scions don't count).

2800 is light too, that is awesome! just needs a turbo version with a small front mount and i think they'll capture the market instantly. MUST be RWD also, none of that FWD crap.

Honda was getting 240hp with their 4, so I don't see that as being unrealistically high...
