Default Rally-x Car

So I love my STi a bit to much to turn it into a rally-x car. I was kicking the idea of getting a dedicated rally-x/rally car. I'm thinking a WRX ('02) Bugeye for the following reasons;

Relatively cheap and easy to mod.
2.0 which if I want to eventually run it for real it will be in spec (i think)
I could easily gut a bunch of crap and sell it getting some money for mods
Smaller brake package for rally sized wheels and tires
Bigger market for taking from totalled cars

I just can't imagine taking my 2 yr old car out into the forest and beat the hell out of the body and paint, especially since I take the car on trips on the weekend when I'm not auto-x'ing it.

Just an idea because I'd like to get into rally's.

Try actually going to a Rally Cross. If you hit a carwash on the way back its no worse than an autocross really.

The difference between real Rally and Rally Cross is HUGE. They really aren't comparable as far as car prep and investment go.

I went to a local rallycross, even rode along with a guy who was flogging his STi around. It was a far cry from a paved course. The rocks and gravel kicking into the wheel wells made it almost impossible to hear anything else inside the car, and the rough spots in the course tossed us both up hard against the seat belt tensioners more than once.

I RallyX my WRX and have a blast in it. It also doesn't take a lot to build a competitive car. Dirt is a phenominal equalizer when it comes to the cars; I feel RallyX is more about the driver than AutoX is. Two of the fastest drivers in my local division race 2.5RS' on snow tires. One of the fastest drivers in Stock AWD is a friend of mine who races a GC Outback Sport.

You can do real well on very little car if you get seat time.

As for wear on the car, that really depends on the track. Some are smooth, some are rough. Like all racing, you have to be willing to break it to make it. But if you're just out there for fun, there's no rule that says you can't slow down if you think it's too rough.

definitely try going to a rallycross to spectate if you aren't ready to try it yet. bring a helmet (or use their loaners) and ask a couple people for rides. note that if you ride in a gutted car, it sounds much worse than any car that still has its stock interior. but you'll be able to get an idea of how rough the terrain is, and whether you're willing to put your car through it. i only run my legacy at the rallyX's in summit point, wv, but i just ran my first rallyX in the STi yesterday...it is so much more fun. i will be doing it again, but never at summit point. the field is just too rough, and that car is lowered.
