Default First Auto-x

I've been thinking about doing trackdays for a while now, but for various reason haven't been able to get out there.

However, I'm fortunate enough to have the old El Toro air field about 10 minutes from my house in Socal. They hold auto-x events there every so often, and I think it would be a good way to start out...

Upon first glance at the schedule, I found an event on the 15th of July, but I see that it is a "Championship" event... Is this not a good one to pick as a first time? I know that I won't be competitive, so should I even bother with this one?

Thanks for the suggestions/tips

a really good way to start is to find what forum your local track enthusiasts frequent (usually theres a sports car club or something in your city) and ask them whats up, its a good way to make sure you know someone at the track the day you go too. Then they can give you the heads up on whats going on.

As long as its not more money because of the event I would go. You might get intimidated by the competition but I love that. There will be alot of people there to give you some good tips. But, speedventures is running auto x at california for $80 the 14th of this month..

Hey man. Definitely try solo2.com for some practice events. There is no classing and allows awesome (subaru competing) instructors show you the potential of your car. Plus, you can do all the mods you want to enjoy road racing, and yet not worry about classing.

From my personal experience, autoxing before road racing was awesome. I know that in auto-x I can't flip my car. I can eat some cones, spin out, and maybe get some laughs, but its all done in a safe environment. If I hadn't done it before track days, I would never have had the confidence to really push myself.

After some events, speed-ventures is amazing! No cone working, 1 hour + of track time, and higher speeds make road racing my favorite. Its like hitting the canyons with no cops, or more importantly traffic and other people you can hurt. There events are really well put together, just try and find another subaru experienced driver to be your instructor.

Good luck!

If you think ~$170 is bad, imagine being a nonmember and paying $60 for an autox.

In a typical autox, normally, you get 12 runs at 1.5 minutes each run = 18 minutes of time on the track. You also have to work two session picking up cones.

In a speed ventures event, you get 5 sessions of ~20 minutes of track time = 100 minutes on the track. No work sessions needed.

I am not saying autox isn't worth, I am going this weekend. I am just saying that to make these events happen, with insurance liability, rental costs, and etc., it is definitely is pricey.

Fire away with any questions, I am a full time SoCal auto-x'r.

I'll be at the Sun. SCCA event at Fontana this weekend. I run in the first half of the day, 2nd run group. There is also a Pract. session on Sat. of which is full, but active spectating, I mean ride alongs, is great for learning the ropes. There will be at least a few STI's there on Sat. Look for the heavily stickered Black 06 STI and ask for Max and Pete sent ya. Max and I are principals of the TeamBlew Solo Club in Socal.

A Stock, but with a Local Street tire class called SK1.

Swing by on your break from the speedvenutres area and visit with max, South West p-lot lot at Cal Speedway.
