When I look back to my first track day I was completely amateurish. I was changing gears way too often, braking too early, missing the apex etc. etc. I then went out with an instructor, he drove. It was night and day, he used just two gears instead of my four, kept it smooth and went faster. He said it was like a dance, no stepping on toes, keep with the rythym.

I was at Laguna Seca on yesterday and after half a days session I realized that I was consistently doing exactly the same thing at every part of the track. I followed the same line (racing), braked at the same point, hit the apex, accelerated, in other words keeping a rythym. On your first track day, don't try to go fast but concentrate on the line, keeping it smooth by not changing gears unnecessarily, brake late but hard in a straight line, rotate through the corner, late apex and smoothly bring on the power. Do it consistently and you will find that once you find the rythym your speed will start to increase.

If you do six sessions on your track day figure the first one to get to know the track, second to get warmed up, third to start pushing it a little more, fourth and fifth to really get the rythym going and speed steadily increasing and the sixth to have a mellow finish and go home very satisfied.

I am pretty quick on the track, able to compete with Z06's, M3's etc. but I go out there with the knowledge that I don't have the fastest car and I am not the best driver and there's probably lesser cars with better drivers outperforming me and that's fine. There's always someone faster than you and if you accept that you can go out there with pride and have safe fun.

Let us know how you got on.
