Default WRC Pace Notes

I did a quick search, but I know someone has it handy....

Where's a thread to interpret rally pace notes?

Thanks!

To my knowledge, every co-driver has his own system of pace-notes. They all may be similar, but, one co-driver's notes may be completely foreign to another co-driver.

Google can help: http://www.pacenotes.com/

The two digit number is usually the speed for the turn and the single digit number is usually the gear to be in. Other than that it's pretty much driver/codriver specific as far as I know.

the 2 digit number is the distance to said obsticle and the single digit number is the sharpness of a turn. on a scale of 1-10 , 10 being a 90 right and 1 being a slight bend. After that such things as over crest = over hill, keep center over jump = self explainitory, opens wide = opens wide and so on.

That works.

Thanks!

Now the question is: Does Phil quote distance to Petter in meters or feet. I'm guessing meters.

Also: 5 Right minus = 45 degree turn to the right..minus... (what does minus mean??)

I think that the scale is reverse, 1 being extremely tight and 10 being a faster turn. If you watch the footage of Petter on this stage in Rally Finland ( http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...petter+solberg )he is on a very fast and sweeping stage, you can hear Phil rattle off a heap of 5 rights/lefts and 6 rights/lefts while the tighter turns get a lower number. Each driver co driver is different though, listening to the in car footage of Danny Sordo and his co driver they use a whole different scale then Petter and Phil.

I would say that minus means that the turn might tighten on its self like a decreasing radius turn.

IIRC, I thought the lower the number the sharper the turn?

It is... there's a video that was posted recently (might be in the non-STI section) of Solberg going for a stage record. Listen long enough and you can start to figure it out. All the hairpins are called out as "1's". It's crazy how quickly the instructions are rattled off... I'd get confused.

Sometimes. The pacenote styles I've seen vary. Some of them use a single digit number to describe the tightness of the turn with the larger number being tighter and some with the smaller number being tighter. In fact there are probably exceptions to this but in every instance where I've seen the smaller number mean the tighter turn, it's been because they were calling out the suggested gear.

Calling out the gear for the turn does two things for the driver:
1.) He'll use the right gear for the turn every time
2.) He gets a vague idea of how tight the turn is and at what speed he needs to take it

I still prefer the 1 - 10 scale for a turn because it's more precise in the video games I've played, haha.

But it is most common for the two-digit number to represent the distance before you reach the turn. And if you hear that two-digit number called out with anything other than an American accent then it probably means meters.

i said it backwards, that was my mistake. but yea, phil mills and petter use 1-10 as a scale with 1 being tightest and 10 being a straight. they dont call gears to be in, the driver knows that already. it becomes second nature for them to find the right gear. and i belive everwhere its in meters, even rallyusa uses meters if im not mistaken. btw some of you locals want to come join me june 2nd at Wellsboro for the Susquehannock trail rally?

from what i gather, minus means slow down, plus means speed up.

I was using the Solberg stage record vid as a reference to ask my questions...

What's crazy is how far ahead Phil calls the turns. I'm sure it's a focus thing, but listening and watching the vid, I can't think that far ahead. The trees blowing past is too overwhelming.

I was reading through this thread again and just for the record, I Do know the difference between

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Mills

and

Similar names, different sports. I may have mixed up the names.
