Default Re: Track Daze VIR Full [August 30-31]

The STi has survived another track day and I am even more impressed by the performance of the car. Ran the TrackDaze event which was excellent with tons of seat time and plenty of space to stretch the Subies legs. All the cars on the track were plenty fast which left tons of open laps and very few trains. I had a great instructor that was excellent at pushing me where I needed to be pushed. I was definetily on the gas a whole lot longer around the track and compressing my braking zones although only a few times did I really full out get on the brakes. I did manage one off at the end of Turn 1 but I was only going about 10 mph and just sort of rolled off the track realizing there was no need to attempt a 2 off save. The last session I was soloed off and that was really a lot of fun and I could really see where all the instruction was paying off as I was forced to tell myself what I was doing incorrectly.

The uphill esses are a lot of fun at speed. The most courage I could muster was a 105 exit speed but I only actually looked down that one lap. End of the back straight I could redline 5th which is ~ 135 and it was excellent to bear down on the brakes and loop your stomach approaching into the next turn. Unfortunately I was going through about a HALF tank of gas PER session. The brakes performed wonderfully, I could really get on them with tons of confidence and never did I overstretch their limit although I'm still looking to build some brake ducts. The RE01-Rs had a TON of grip in comparison to my WAY over heatcycled RE070s. I'm becoming much more comfortable with trailbraking and controllably rotating the car to avoid the dreaded Subie understeer. This car impresses me more and more and I didn't realize how fast I was moving until my instructor pointed out the fact that I had lapped a few cars twice and a lot of nice comments from other drivers.

All in all I am really impressed with this group and I plan on attending more of their events in the future. Currently I really like how the car is performing but not sure how much more I'm willing to put it out on the track. Quite a few times I was left in the dust by some upper hp cars *cough*Ferrari, Camaro, etc.. *cough* down the straights. Its quite rewarding get the point by and leaving them in the dust through the infield and checking the mirror half way down the straight to see them just making it around oak tree. Looking forward to the NASA Summit main event but now I just may have to sign up for TrackDaze Shenandoah.

Unfortunately my instructor looped his 993 into a tire wall off of the same turn he was warning me about every session.. Turn 10. Luckily he was alright and was still able to instruct me for the rest of the day. Props to him for being such a good influence.
