| Poor Speed Racer Feedback Score: 8 reviews | Day 0: 2:30 Am Wake up and try to stay awake 3:30 Am hit the road starting in washington DC 3:30 Pm Get to the track and offload the car 9:00 Pm pass out... Day 1: The St Eustache Autodrome is a 1 mile "rallycross" course The pavement here is not the greatest, its bumpy with tons of patches, slick in some parts, grippy in others with some interesting twists. The weird parts of the track are it crosses into the banked oval (only a few degrees banked so its not bad) and the hairpin that brings you onto the 1/8 mile drag strip. Its really technical with lots of tricks you need to pick up for the locals to really go fast. The first session out there was standing water from the rain that night. This meant that there was NO grip, i mean none at all. The Redline Time Attack, Function Tuned E36 M3 has stock power, and even it was hard to control the first session. Looking at the times, we ran a 1:08, which is not all that great, even in the wet. Once the track had dried it was a lot more fun. I went out the next session and had a local in an ITR (from Trac Racing) pass me. I followed him a little and learned the line. After a lap or two we both picked it up and put on a little and started running consistent 1:05's. I was really happy, but i knew the car had more. Following that ITR really gave me some insight on to where i was slow, and where i could be a little faster. I gave a ride to a guy (tom i think was his name) that worked for Car Crazy (yea, that speed TV show ) who was really nice and loved the ride. My friend Kevin (owner of the car) game over yelling 1:04! SWEET! the times just keep getting lower. The last session of the day I took a Redline staff member out and had a blast. I ran a string of low 1:05's into the 1:04's and ended up with a 1:04.3 as my fast lap of today. I am really really happy with the car, the setup and the track. I'd like to thank Redline Time Attacks for putting on this event, and to Trac Racing for helping me learn the track, and for being great competitors. Overall today was great, the track was fast, and so was the car. I hope tomorrow brings the same. More will come, including pictures and maybe a video or two. Well i figured I'd post about about the Redline Time Attacks first international Time Attack. My roommate kevin is nice enough to let me drive his Redline Time Attack/Function Tuned E36 M3. We made the drive friday up here to Montreal and here is the story: Day 0: 2:30 Am Wake up and try to stay awake 3:30 Am hit the road starting in washington DC 3:30 Pm Get to the track and offload the car 9:00 Pm pass out... UPDATE: Day 2: We wake up early fill up the car and get to the track when it opens. The car gets offloaded and we start looking over the car. We check the tires pressures and thats when I found it. The right front was at 5psi! 5!?!?! EEK! there is clearly a problem there, but I could not find the problem, no nail, nothing. So i talk to the owner and he said fill it up and run it. I fill it up, run it and see that its just fine, but i make note to fill up before every session. I check the oil, and the coolant and warm the car up. Next comes the drivers meeting, the usual time attack details and before I know it I'm on grid. The car is all warmed up and I get out on track and go for it. First run of the day ended with some timing problems and the only lap i got was a 1:06 For the next session i offer the passengers seat up to a friend and we go out. He had a blast but it was cut short because i was black flagged (which turned out to be for the car i just passed). There were only two practice sessions before lunch and I had all sorts of things to do before lunch like pick up someone from the hotel. Once i got back waited for the next session worrying about the tire and the car, but i found people with air (no air at the track ) and used that. I kept filling the tires up and kept going out, and the car was just fine every time. The final times were posted for practice and i manages a 1:03.4! clearly the car can handle a WOT pass over the oval into the infield (not something for the faint hearted), and i finally grew the balls to try it. I had found my second, and it was time to time attack. And thats when it hit me, 3 R32 Skyline GTS-T's pulled in, and they were ALL competing in Street rear wheel drive. That G was still in the 1:02's, the skylines were unknown, but i knew all the cars running in modified rwd. The car to beat was a 05 Mustang gt on RA-1's running 1:03's... so was I, and it was time to switch class. As i was called to grid, i told them i was changing classes and they said that would be fine (trust me they worked their asses off to fit me in! Thanks Redline!). I watched all the skylines, and the G go at it as i wondered if the M on rt-615's could beat a stang on R-comps. I was called to gird and put in the back (due to the change). I was just behind yet another r32, turned on the camera and it was show time. Now, i could say that it was all flying laps, and i drove so fast and this and that. But i did nothing more than drive smart, braking at all my markers, turning in consistently, and getting on the gas as early as possible. I got out of the car and figured nothing more than a 1:03.X, as i did botch some laps, but they were solid laps. The times were posted later and to my surprise i had a 1:02.X (where x > 7, lol) and very consistent laps. I was happy, but the mustang had me by .05 seconds (what is it with times bing that close?!). I really needed to find time, and hope that he didn't. During the practice session i took another friend out and had a good time. Being a "ring taxi" was a great time, and there is nothing better than seeing an ear to ear grin from the passenger. "not pushing" the car i hit a 1:03.8, which i think means i finally know the track well and am just refining the line. Before i knew it i was on gird again, this time with the intent to really push the car, and hope i don't over drive it. Now that i had my line down it was all inputs, brake a little later, try to get on the gas a little sooner and keeping the rear wheels under the car. Those where the only goals, i knew the line, i know the car well and it was just time to let it all hang out. Thats what i did, and the price i paid, was missing a shift coming into the bus stop on the last lap. I figure it was par for the course, it was only a minor problem and it was the last lap. I pulled in and was really exhausted and excited. The weekend was at an end, i had a great time and drove as fast and as smart as i think i could have. Come the awards ceremony i placed second in the modified glass with a 1:02.7, which was .1 seconds slower than that mustang. In fact if i had not changed class i would have still be in second as that G was .2 seconds faster than me. Thats the price we pay for rolling the dice and hoping for a win. All and all it was a GREAT day, lots of fun and I'd like to thank Redline Time Attack for another great event, Trac racing for helping, and my sponsor Kevin, for letting me drive his Redline Time Attack/Function Tuned M3. I have video I'll upload later. Last edited by spazegun2213; 06-03-2007 at 05:25 PM. |
