Trailer queen?!

I've always dreamt about starting amateur racing, even if it is SCCA AutoX or road racing. My ideal setup would be daily drivers (mine and my wife's) and my race car.

Anybody think that down the road after driving their STi for a few years that they will make it a trailer queen and use it exclusively as a racecar?

i too have long dreamt about doing some amateur racing. ("if i had another live..." i always tell friends and family.) but in this life, the expense of car racing worries me.

then one day, i saw the light. KARTING! woohoo! inexpensive compared to racing real cars (you can get started for ~$5k), very fast, and best of all (for me at least) is know that like 99% of current F1 drivers started in karting and many stay in shape in the off-season doing karting. this has to tell you something. also, i can start my kids in it before they'd be legal to drive a car. many perks.

This is true, but with a really inexpensive car like a Honda Civic Si hatch or something. Of course it would take some mechanic experience.

Karting huh? Got any links that I can start info on that? The only thing I see with that is since I am a big guy I would be a big disadvantage with power to weight ratio. What do you think?

I'm 6'4" and about 245/250..eek!

I've started thinking the STi may end up being such a perfect platform for an all-out autox car that I may use it as a daily driver and weekend racer for the usual 3-4 years, and then just keep the car and buy a new daily driver. We'll see what happens in 3-4 years though....

i'm close; 6'2" 235. i was concerned about this also, but i recently attended my first race (as a spectator) and there were some big guys out there hauling tail. damn! i just realized you're in germany. look up karting in your "yellow pages". it's very popular in europe and south america. also, the current F1 champion (michael schumacher) is german and supposedly his family owns some karting tracks. in any case, check out karting if you have a chance. hit this link for german karting tracks:

Yeah, Germany/Europe has tracks EVERYWHERE!!! There are some at the old airbase where I live. Lots of fun, but pretty pricey. I guess it would be better to be involved in a club and own my own.. So, at 235 you didn't have any BIG ( :wink: ) problems? I tried this karting track and did ok, but this little skinny guy smoked EVERYONE..he was good.

I am getting my STi the end of July. 91TB78 was talking about racing a Honda Civic, I race a Honda CRX Si in SCCA ITA. It is nott as cheap as you think. Buy your first car, don't build one. Your looking at close to $20,00 in mods to be competetive, and you also have to factor in tires, axles, brakes, ect... In only 4 races, I have gone through 2 sets of tires ($800) 2 sets of brakes ($700) 4 broken axles ($600) 1 broken hub ($250), and one broken shift fork in the transmission (over $1,100). You also have to factor in stuff like saftey gear ($2,000), enclosed trailer ($5,000), and probaly over $1,500 in tools. I have had to stop entering a few events because it is so expensive, and this is just about the cheapest way to get in to road track racing. Also, if you or someone else wrecks your car, you don't get any money for it, so you have to be able to start all over again. If you want to go racing, go karting.

Yep,

I definitely plan on driving my STi on the street for a few years and enjoying it. Afterwards, I hope to modify it into a full spec racing machine. But first, something else will have to come out that i would rather drive around in all day,
