the nearest local tuner is in Oceanside, but he only tunes ecutek or utec I believe. The shop is called I-Speed/ Crawford Performance. heres a link :
http://www.i-speed.us/home/

if you are interested in getting the Cobb AP, the nearest tuner would be Harman Motive, in LA area. heres a link : http://www.harmanmotive.com/

btw since you are in San Diego area i'd suggest you hit up www.awjunkies.com because most of us in there are from socal as well.

thanks. i found both of them with a web search. any opinions on
which way to go? i'm kinda pulled to the AP and Harman would
be a do-able day trip, but that's based on a pretty uninformed
opinion (my own).

While there are many good (as well as bad....) tuners, I use Harman and would recomend them to anyone.

I have used my AP to go from a simple stg 1 (250ish-whp) up to my current 400whp set up and there's more left in it if I choose, all from Harman.

I also have the fastest street tire class STI at Redline Time Attacks this year, all tuned by Harman. I even beat most Modified class (race tires, widebody/flares, etc) cars and even some unlimited class cars, all with my street tired DD Harman STI.

Talk to Dan (owner) or Ian (manager), mention me, and they will take good care of you.

Good info, but he left out the fact that the Subarus that beat him were tuned by Bill at I-Speed.

Our shop car that Bill tunes with the Easy ECU has won sixteen events in the last year and set four track records... There is not one Subaru tunner that can come close to that type of record.

Good luck with your car

thanks for the clarification. maybe i'll bring the
car over to discuss options. i was kinda leaning toward
the AP, but that's not set in stone.

cheers.

With all due respect (and I do respect the Crawford guys), you didnt read what I said.

I accurately stated that I have been the fastest STI in the street tire class which is true. Your cars that have posted better times than me are in the Mod or unlimited classes, not the street tire class, you follow very different rules. Also true is that I have beaten most Mod class cars and even some Unl class cars with my street class car, esp when they blow up!

Redline class rules: http://www.redlinetimeattack.com/index-2.html

-My car has 140-UTQG (street compound) tires while you guys are running full race tires.

-I run the stock wheels and no fender flaring etc while you guys have a full widebody kit and significantly bigger wheel/tire/brake combo.

-I am running the stock TMIC, stock style turbo, off the shelf AP (tuned by Harman), and completely stock motor internals, clutch, and driveline while you guys are running either a Cosworth or ??? engine with front mount IC and big rotated turbo. I have 400whp on a Dynojet (prob an optimistic #), rumor has it that your car has 550+whp, is that true? What's the actual whp# and how was it measured?

-I have over 25k miles on my '06 car that is just over 1 year old, a true daily driver that sees kids and groceries every week. BTW, my stock AC blows cold, does yours ?

-My car is full weight and then some. (I am 240ish... )

-My car would cost anyone about $50k OTD retail to duplicate including the cost of a brand new STI. What would it cost me OTD (or any retail customer) for an identical car as yours including the price of a brand new STI?

Like I stated, I have total respect for Crawford and Co. and I am sure that I would have been very happy if I had gone to them instead of Harman. In all fairness, I initially chose Harman because they are closer to me by almost 4hrs round trip and at the time, I had read a lot of internet crap about Crawford (BTW, I hold Cawford in high esteem and have been totally happy with them in my limited contact/business with them). Harman has/is taking great care of me and Crawford would be my choice if I ever needed to use another shop.

Abbynormal, keep us informed with what you do, I'm sure you'll be happy with either of these choices.

BTW, is that a Young frankestein reference?

Sorry Sir, twas not my plan to ruffle your feathers. Re-read my post and you will see I said nothing about your car being slower in the street class than ours. On the contrary, you and your car is plenty quick at the track

As for our power level, we run different engine packages in our Time Attack car for R/D purposes. That being said, 450 to 550+ WHP covers most of them.

Why the reference to us running a Cosworth motor in our Crawford Performance street car?

Please come by our shop and get a tour. You will see our “clean room” where all our motors are assembled, and on the rotisserie in the fab shop sits our new "full race" Time Attack car.

Correct, you didnt claim to have beaten me in the "street" class but you also didnt clarify that you were talking about $100k+ cars that compete in completely different classes either. Your above statement implies that I was beat "apples to apples" when in fact our cars are more like "apples to oranges", esp when the vastly different class rules and budgets are mentioned/included. I was the fastest STI in the "street" class even though a handfull of cars racing in "Mod" and "Unl" class did post better times than me (some didnt ), including the "Mod" and "Unl" cars you mentioned.

BTW, what power level were you at for the Cal Speedway race and what would it cost a regular customer to have you build a brand new duplicate of that car?

I thought I saw a Cosworth name on the motor in the car you did so well with at Cal Speedway. If I am wrong, then sorry for my mistake. I know you guys build great motors and it didnt strike me as strange that you may use some Cosworth or ??? parts. I didnt mean to imply anything negative by that.

With proper tuning etc, what do you feel is the highest safe whp from a stock motor? At what point does a better clutch become mandatory (no drag racing)?

Thanks

Which California speedway event, with or without the oval?

I am not sure what you saw under the hood but all the custom parts we use in our motors are designed by us and assembled in our clean room. Cosworth makes some nice parts but we out run their sponsored Subaru with a stock motor in our car.

We run a comfortable 450WHP on a stock motor while using race fuel. You could run higher, but like you, we have to drive our car home from the track.
Hard to say on the clutch question, it depends on your torque level and driving style.

You are quite welcome. Keep up the good work, we like to see Subys in the winner circle

I was refering to the Redline Time Attack from Feb at Cal Speedway.

What would a customer duplicate car cost? I am curious to see what the price of admission would to be in order to compete at the highest level of STI. You guys def have the STI to beat these days, congrats on that!

My wtq is 425 and I am relatively easy on the clutch. What clutch do you recomend?

At the Redline Time Attack we ran our S4 stroker shortblock mated to our race ported heads, CP35R turbo kit and I-Speed Easy ECU tuning. We ran this package at 550+WHP.

Please contact sales@crawfordperformance.com for an estimate on a turn key Time Attack car, we offer different levels depending on how fast you want to go

You can get away with an organic disk and a heavy pressure plate if you drive it easy. If not, go with a six puck disk. Again, contact our sales department for options/price.

Thanks for the kind words.
